my friend showed my this link on kickstarter for what looks to me like a 445nm laser lamp. Seems kinda pointless to me, but to each there own including the price i guess.

Blue Laser Lamp- with passive cooling technology by Richard Redpath ? Kickstarter

Been a while since i've been active on this forum (except for a couple days ago) but i'm assuming diodes for 445 are becoming increasingly cheaper and are still being harvested from the dreaded projectors which cannot be named here!

Not to mention the change in chemical composition of the eye that will take place being subjected to the Blueish hue of the spectrum over a broad period of time.

^ Was just gonna mention that. Even just playing around with 445nm for a while is enough to give me a bit of a headache, I don't think it's going to make a very good lamp.

I doubt it would be eye-safe. The middle dots are certainly over 5mw. And since eye has very low sensitivity to 445nm, at the same power you would have less usable light. Eye also does not focus well under such deep blue light only, and as mentioned, there is that blue light hazard.
Green laser would be much better. Still the power would have to be distributed much more evenly to ASSURE individual beams are under 5mW. Things (and people) look weird under monochromatic green light though.

This is an interesting concept, but implementing it with 445 is a really bad idea. 638nm diodes would be a better option.

Blue light, aside from the blue light hazard from long term exposure, also stimulates wakefulness... the last thing you want in a night light. Most of the people I show a blue laser to find the light to be harsh, and the yellow after image to be very unpleasant.

What would be truly incredible is a small, efficient, white balanced module... for flashlights especially.

I've never understood this and I fear I never will; maybe you can clarify.

assumption 1: blue light causes bad things in the eye (chemical changes, cancer, furby urine, whatever)
assumption 2: Blue light is a component of white light
assumption 3: white light is perfectly safe in moderate levels of course.

What is the mechanism by which green and/or red light eliminate the hazards of blue light?
