can you use gel paper that you use for lights in a band to make laser goggles?
i shine my laser thru it and it blocks all the light.
just a small beam gets thru.
looks just like the way my red goggles does.
any answers would be appreciated.
thanks and God bless.

No. Never skimp on goggles. Your eyes are worth a lot more than the $50-$100 that goggles cost.

Lighting gels might block some light, but if they ever get a direct hit they might bleach or melt in a fraction of a second, making them effectively worthless.

I wouldn't trust, but I also can't say it's tottaly wrong.
The correct thing to do would be to run tests with a high power laser and a LPM.

what is the difference in laser goggles and gel paper?
they look the same and they both block light.
all you can see is a tiny beam, bearly visable, coming out of the gel paper.
so do you know what the goggles do different.
i have a pair of red goggles that block the green light.
and all you see is a tiny little beam coming thru the other side of the goggles.
and when i use the green or the dark blue gel paper on the red laser, it does the same effect.
just a small beam comes thru the other side just like with my goggles.
so i wonder what is the big difference?
i placed the laser all the way up against the gel paper and it did not melt or even get warm.
thanks for your reply and God bless.

To be honest, this has been answered many times. Use the search button as it has been explained in technical terms. Something to do with the gels bleach faster than the materials used to make the goggles. But yeah, you only get one pair of eyes in this lifetime, protect them wisely.

Re: Can you use gel paper that you use in band to make laser goggles

Don't do it. Those films work by absorption so the light will poke through. Laser goggles have covered sides to keep beams from skimming past your head and hitting the inside surface, reflecting off and goin' right in.

Good goggles have big lenses and good side protection. I personally like OD2 for less than a Watt. It allows me to see the light but cuts it to 1/100 intensity. Not a problem if you don't look directly into the beam (and there's never a reason to do that anyway).

If you do make goggles out of that film, use at least three layers of it. That way you'll avoid problems caused by pinholes, and it'll be safer. Still I have to say that false security is worse than no security. Follow good handling practices for Class 3b laser light (certainly for anything over 20mW) in the Safety section. Watch Ebay or here for a good deal on good goggles.

Laser versus paper? Not a good plan. I've SEEN <100mW lasers burn through those gel filters with no problem at all. They don't just bleach them.

Well I suppose you could also use an Aluminum Pie Plate and some
rubber bands as a Motorcycle helmet.....

[EDIT]
Short Answer NO.. If you can't afford appropriate Laser safety Googles
you should not operate a high powered Laser.. IMO

There's no reason to discuss this. The answer is no.
Spend more money to buy the proper eyeware or only by lasers of 5mw or less.

We already told you why this is a bad idea. Asking again will not get you a different answer.
