Sometimes I bring my 5mW green pointer to a mall or other indoor public place and aim it at the floor, right in front of small kids. They love it, and wonder where the sudden green dot came from, stopping and looking all around for the source, while their parents chuckle. When I do this with dogs or cats, the result is different: pets try to chase the dot, but they never wonder where the source of the light is.

It is interesting.
I think that it just never occurs to a dog, for example, that the little dot originates from an operator.
To them it probably seems like a prey item in their environment.

Let's say you squeak a dog's favorite toy while hiding behind a couch or in another room... the dog will probably perk up its ears and investigate to find the source of the squeak.

The problem solving ability seems to be there but a dog or a cat might lack the comprehension of what a laser is. I'm sure a dog (maybe not all dogs) can learn to associate the laser with a human operator just like the case of the squeak toy.

My theory: children are smarter then animals (in some ways) and familiar with the fact that its a light. Animals, on the other hand, dont know what that 'bright light' is everywhere they look up, nor do they know what 'light' really is. Instead, there prey instinct kicks in and tells them "GET THAT DOT." Children, know that you need a light to see in a dark room, and to every bit of light there need to be a source.

LOL my cat must be weird Because when I shine a laser on the ground and he sees it and looks straight at me. :p with a UGG I know its you face.
He use to chase them years ago.
One thing I notices is that he would chase a red laser but with a green laser he would just follow it with his head, never chase it. If I got a red and green laser and put the green dot right in front of him he would just stare at it but if I changed the dot to red he pounced it .

He would also chase violet but if I put a red an violet side bi side he would always go for red.

nahh some just dont care.
my dog, (who is a freaking genius in some cases) will just ignore it. the biggest reaction ive ever gotten from him was when he was a puppy, he followed a flashlight once. after that he figured it out and wont care for it any more.
On a side note, he opens doors when you tell him to and will howl on command :D

When I use my 405, 532, or 635 around my dog, he looks strait at the hand holding the laser. He makes the connection instantly every time. I have tested this to see if there was a color he doesn't see.

My daughter had a Chihuahua that would go nuts looking around for the dot just hearing the tinkle of the key chain on the Laser. And because he could hear that the tinkle came from our hand he soon associated the tinkle and our hand with the laser. If we tinkled the chain without turning on the laser he would go after our hand. We used to say 'get the bug' while he chased the laser. My daughter moved away and for years the dog never saw a laser. On a recent visit I said "Chico, get the bug." He went crazy looking for the dot, even nipping at my hand. I didn't even have a laser.

How do you know your 5mW Laser that you take and use
in public is actually 5mW....:thinking:

I've purchased quite a few 5mW 532nm Lasers and not one
is as low as 5mW... Mine range between ~20mW and ~60mW....:eek:

Aren't those mall floors shiny....:thinking:

Good point , be careful since most of them are 30-60mW .. But i hope you know that already, and are referring to the <5mW rated pen lasers..

Looks like there are some savvy pets out there. But so far no cats or dogs have taken to using laser pointers themselves, so there's a limit to their curiosity! I can't be certain it's a 5mW, but it's pen-style and emits only a very thin beam at night. The mall floors are reflective marble tile, but the bounceback is minimal and dispersed, could it really harm a tyke's eyes?

I would tell you to get lost if I was at the mall with my kids and someone I don't know is trying to spark my kids attention. Especially, someone with an unknown laser...

My cat gave me a scare a few days ago as my cheap 405nm was on my bed next to me and she jumped up, landed on the button and nearly hit me in the eye with it :(.
