Interesting diodes from burner..

Yep, I took these out of a "Super Multi-DVD CD Burner" from an HP laptop drive.

The 2 diodes on the left are the ones in question; the one on the very right is a standard 5.6 mm IR diode, not from the drive. It's there for scale/reference.

Rather interesting packages. The left one is 5.6 mm, but it's...weird. Like it's squished. It fits in an aixiz module though!

The other one, the really small one... no idea.

I'm gonna find out tomorrow what speed the drive was. I left it at the computer repair place. :p

I want to say it was above 20x since the drive was made in 2009. I do remember that much.

Thats a weird diode??? have you tried powering it up?

I've gotten the same diodes back when I didn't know what to look for (after watching kipkay.) the tiny one is a red with the normal case neg Setup, I belieeve the square one was red too.

EDIT: I didn't see the diode well, it's only flat on one side? No idea :/ I had one squished to a slant on the front. I've also had a rectangular diode as well.

A bit better of a picture. The diode is flat on two sides. It's really odd.

And I wanna say the small one is a 3.8 mm can, right? It's interesting because it's a closed can, but it's also windowless...

I'll try powering them (well, the 5.6 mm one anyway, I don't have any 3.8 mm mounts) later tonight.

Tested the weird squished one...

It's the red diode. I also managed to LED it. Nothing special about it other than the very odd can style...

However, the other smaller 3.8 mm can one is... interesting. It's an IR diode. Tested it at a low current of 380 mA, and it lases; I also of course used very short duty cycles. I also used a pair of self locking tweezers as a heatsink.

I don't think I've heard of an IR diode in a 3.8 mm can before. Interesting.
