HI Folks!

I'm chasing some info on a laser i've inherited that has a dead power supply (110vac power supplies don't like 240vac)

The tube has a sticker on it with the make and model number:
Melles Griot Model# 6628000-001
I'd really like to know if it works, so any information I can get would be great, and if a new power supply can be purchased/built, i'd be interested in info regarding that as well.

Thanks in advance, I hope to hear from you all soon!

Cheers

Is that ALL of the information on it anywhere? Is it just a bare tube? Someone here might know; but usually the Melles Griot assemblies are in the format of NN-LHR-NNNN, or NN-LHP-NNNN, etc... (LGR for green, LOR for orange)... (i.e, 05-LHR-0151)

Not sure if there's any reference on the bare tubes...

OK, silly me looked at the big label on the side of the tube and didn't even think to look on the end of it.

The info in my above post is on a sticker on the side of the outter tube.

The following is on the end cap.

Model# 05-LHP-151
Date of Manufacture: November 1985 (Nearly as old as me!)

The tube is 400mm long and approx 40mm in diameter

The power supply (which doesnt work) is from "Laser Drive Inc" and carries a model number of "05-LPM-340" and an output voltage of 2150vdc @ 6.5ma

I'd really like to know some more info about this laser =)

Cheers

Zach.

thanks for the reply!

So I have a 4mw red!

Now i suppose the question is, what to do with it?

Is it worth fixing up? or should I just stick it on Ebay?

There's probably nothing to fix up, you probably just need a working power supply. Someone here could probably get you going pretty minimally, as far as cost goes, with a supply that'd be adequate for it.

I'd say keep it because:
-They don't really go for much on eBay
-You can't ever have too many lasers, can you? (looks at signature...)
-632.8 @ 5mW ain't half bad for color and brightness.

Sounds fair enough to me, so who do i need to talk to about replacing/repairing the power supply?

it was purchased in USA and although says it is 110/230VAC it didnt like being plugged in in australia!

Needless to say, for the laser to have any use to me, some kind of 12vdc to 2150vdc power supply would be ideal!

What kind of distance should i expect to get a visible 'dot' at?

daguin may have a 12vdc 'brick', I don't want to speak for him though... If he doesn't, though, Sam Goldwasser almost certainly will. (Sam's Classified Page) - Nothing *exactly* matching listed there (2150vdc) - but you get the idea of the price range. The voltage does not have to be 2150vdc spot on. The voltage and mA rating just has to be close enough to not cause trouble.

PM Dave (daguin) and email Sam, and see what they say. Or post a thread in the Gas forum asking what model of power supply you might want to use for that. (I'm sure there's a wide range - I actually have an 05-LHP-151, and it works fine on several of my supplies..) I'm sure one of them can get you going.

5mW 632.8? -- You'll get a "visible dot" down the street. :) 05-LHP-151 is not a bad laser head at all. Yours is older, but often they can put out 6-7mW.

It would have worked in OZ if, you hooked up the right wires. Different wires are used for 230V
It might still, did it smoke/get hot, when you hooked it up? If not, it might still be good.

Try this:

230 VAC: White to white, yellow open. one white to each "hot" 230V
Green to earth (ground)
TTL high (+3 to +5 VDC) required between yellow/white enable laser. Do Not hook the yellow to +230V 3-5V DC only
Cut violet loop CDRH Delay (if not wanted, it delays your beam for 5 seconds.)
Try hooking it up this way and see what happens. Good Luck!!

Sorry to sound ignorant, but i'd like to get this nailed down before i try it.

The 2 white wires go to the active and neutral of the 240vac and the green goes to the earth pin.

with the purple loop, the laser will have a delay in starting.

Please correct me if I'm wrong =)

Yes, that is correct. If you don't cut the loop, you will have a delay.
According to LaserDrive when using 230V-yellow wire is not used
Here's the hook-up data sheet from LaserDrive:
http://www.laserdrive.com/pdf/henehook.pdf
Your drive is listed under AC input(second one down) Then look in the 5'th column from left, that is your PSU's wires colors.
Look in the last column titled 230VAC---That's your hook-up. Hope it still works.

thanks for that, i've got the info now, i'll let you know how I go!

EDIT:

Folks, I've wired up the PS and run it up on my test bench here at work, but I'm sad to say, I've had no luck.

No smoke, no explosions, but most importantly, no purdy lasers either =(

Is there a way to test the laser without buying another power supply? or am I just going to have to bite the bullet?

I asked earlier about the performance of this laser, because im curious if it might be suitable to testing line of site paths for long distance microwave links... Just a thought...

Anyway, hopefully I can get this baby working, as you've all been very friendly people to deal with, and thats a rarity when you're a member of as many online forms as I am!

Cheers

Zach =)
