Import Tax (UK)

Can anybody roughly explain to me the rules with the Uk, I have read up about it but it is rather confusing...
There is no import tax if a good is marked under £18... how would they know?

"Excise goods are goods on which UK excise duty has been levied. These include beer, wine, spirits and other alcohol products, cigarettes and other tobacco products and mineral oils. Special procedures apply when trading in and moving excise goods."

Does this mean I do not need to pay import tax on a laser as it is not on the levie list?

Kind reguards

Hi Marcus,
Not sure about the latest rules on shipping, I think they recently changed to add to the confusion.
Ive recently bought lasers from China though & have yet to be charged customs & handling duty into the UK.
In the past ive been stung on bigger stuff, but seems to be when the sender declares the full value. some do, some dont!
I always check with the seller now before I buy expensive stuff as a matter of precaution.

Hmm well I am proberbly purchasing a Tank007Cu6x from Pyro for roughly for $369 or so.
Just the shipping is going to cost me $62 which is quite a bummer realy, so you have bought a laser from china and it has been shipped out to you and just arrived at your door fine and no problems have occured?

Customs charges a courier specific, most notably, USPS and FedEx. I've had lasers shipped from China via EMS and have recieved no customs charges at all...

Ahhh sounds good hopefully, so if I was to tell him to mark say £15 on the box would it get through?
I would pay him through paypal, would there be any cross-reference checks between any items sent from his house to mine etc?

I wouldn't have though so, most of my items have been marked as flash light, or light pen then marked as a low value.

From China mine were marked as "hand torch." Also, customs charge isn't calculated by price alone, it's also calculated by weight and the type of shipping you use. Any kind of prority or express mail is more than likely to be charged when it meets this criteria, especially if Parcel Force deal with it on this end, as they'll also charge you for releasing the goods (which in my opinion is blatant theft, the goods aren't theirs, they're mine, but that's a different matter). I bought an item not so long ago that got charged around £8 cutsoms tax (17.5% of the total price) as well as a £13 release fee.

I have more info on this subject as just got stung £11.79 on a $42 item shipped from the USA via USPS priority mail.

From now goods purchased & imported into the EU with a value over £18 (for VAT purposes) and over £120 (for import duty purposes), or goods imported from one private person to another private person as a gift with a value over £36, are subject to Customs charges. These reliefs do not extend to Excise goods e.g tobacco & alchohol

The problem is if the item(s) purchased are of high value, allot of sellers want to make sure it arrives & insures against any losses or damage, rightly so..
So If for example a $369 laser is insured for $60 & the worse case scenario happens the post office will only pay out a max of what it was originally insured for, therefore the seller would loose out!

I think European Government wants to discourage EU residence from spending in none EU countries like America.
It will be interesting to see what happens with shipping charges once the NAU is forged (The North American Union) & the new Amero currency is put to use.

The final agenda is to merge the Amero with the Euro as part of the new world order like it or not!

^^ Ile be the other then & regard this as spam ^^

Didn't quite understand this netwave but in case the SPAM had gone by the time you read my post, there was a SPAM post from someone called Sophia trying to peddle wares and had quoted a previous post to make it look legitimate.

It was definitely SPAM so it wasn't related to your post that is now above mine.

It does look odd now it is gone though. The Mods asked us make a, "I've reported this...", post. Maybe they should delete that one as well perhaps?
