If you just killed a diode 'read this'

Well recently my awesome bluray diode died RIP :'( and it was the only one to light a match. Its like the 5 diodes i got were all not cut out for burning.
Anyway this thread is for people who have just killed their diodes and want to feel better by reading an even worse story than theirs, so i hope this takes off.

SO post your stories of dead diodes and lasers now

I have blown several working units cause of small human errors ,but the worst was a 6x blue bad boy I had that sucker screaming

at 300mA no meter for mW , but that sucker was bright. I was reading how the 6x might not like that setting to well, so,

in the interest of longevity I went into the unit :-/ and commenced to reset down to 240mA I was going to leave it there ;D

atlas when doing the deed using a 1 watt resistor over the resistor for (mV = mA ) switched DVM from auto to manual

Then "pop", gone like the f**king wind. :'( I'll miss you little buddy.

If you blew 5 out of 5 you must be doing something wrong.Very small chance that you were that unlucky :-/

o no i didn't blow them i just couldn't light a red match so i kept upping the ma until they died

This could be a focusing problem you know. Having a "125mW" pulsar from WL doesn't mean you can light a match with it... you need to focus it. I bet any 200mW laser at 4.5mm of BD won't light a match if not properly focused. It happens pretty often when using an aixiz for the first time.

No I didn't blow any diode, coz I'm not a DIYer. But a blu-ray diode did blew up on me though, while playing with it !

I am just about to quote myself from another thread....

A nice safe 110ma out of the driver will give you a good burner as long as you get the following important things right:
1) Good power supply
2) Acrylic lens
3) Opened out lens nut
4) Accurate focussing

I remember the first time I read about taking a diode out of a 16x DVD writer and being able to make a burning laser out of it.

It sure was bright for the 2 miliseconds I had it directly hooked up to a 9 volt battery.

I bought a phr to fix my blu-ray, go it all soldered perfect and i went to screw on the back and both pins broke off of the diode....

needless to say I have not tried diy again...

i blew a LOC and still don't know why... didn't change the power, didn't disconnect it from the driver, only thing that could have happened is that the driver was shorted out over the ld during operation. but afaik this is no way to kill the diode. driver is still working... :-?

Spending $330 on a drive just to take it apart to play with the laser. Now that's dedication to the hobby...

I've blown WAY too many diodes to count.. including some very expensive ones that I don't even like to think about. There's nothing like having a loose connection blow 12 out of 20 emitters on a brand new 20W bar..

I managed to kill a 60W 808nm Coherent brick. It was connected to a power supply and to water cooling. I was going to take some video, so the video camera was on a tripod and close to the brick. The water cooling was running and I started the video camera and brought the laser up to full power. Just as it was starting to burn through some corian countertop material, a water hose blew, spraying me in the eyes and soaking the video camera. With no cooling, the die blew before I could hit power off. The camera worked when it dried out. At least I have a spare die, so this brick will yet live. I've killed about 5 or 6 PHR's foolishly, and a few more on purpose. 4 or 5 20x DVD diodes have met the same fate. I got a mystery tray of unknown c-mounts and managed to kill one figuring them out. Thankfully I've only killed a single 6x bluray, dead short in the host bypassed the driver, LD made a good fuse.
