I propose we start a junk box.

I propose we start a migratory junk box. It'll be a medium flat rate box that gets filled with laser things, then a random person is "picked out of the hat" and it gets mailed to them. Then the chosen person takes out what they like and replaces the stuff with things of equal value. Then it's back to the hat, the box gets mailed on.

I'd start it, but i don't have nearly enough junk. What i think should be included though are diodes, optics, modules, hosts, galvos, or even complete lasers. Let's try to stay away from components like resistors, switches etc.

Opinions?

Edit, here's what we came up with.

There will be boxes for each country, so as not to deal with customs.
We will follow 4HV's model.
I still don't know who will run each box.

There are over 300 active members of LPF, so the logistics get complicated, shipping gets expensive, what if the chosen person doesn't have anything of value? What if the person is new and decides to steal everything? I think this is a bad idea.

Edit: Plus, no one is going to put a pair of scanners in the box, even the cheapest pairs on eBay, shipped from China cost nearly $200.

It's a good idea in theory. Perhaps limit it to veterans only, or somewhat? But then they'd have everything they need.

"We" already have one ;)

Even with just vets participating, there are problems.

I wouldn't expect this one to last a month.

Even if it did get off the ground, there'd be plenty of people (like myself) who would be encouraged to take but not give back (I've got hardly any laser equipment save for my green module and some DVD drive optics).

Apologize for the double post, but another serious thing to consider, going with my edit above, if someone puts a complete laser in the box, what happens when it gets shipped to Australia or back to the US? Customs seizes it and there's a risk everything inside is destroyed or delayed indefinitely. You can ask Yobresal what happens when even one laser in a shipment is overspec.

Wow, you guys don't want to try this at all huh?

We could always just make it small. Diodes, lenses, hosts, drivers.

wow dude...
you know how hard this is going to be to keep track of it.
this is a thing that is being done in the vets section because some people arent responsible enough to "participate" fairly. they might take out a 200mW greenie and put in an aixiz module. or even just keepe the box and say it ggot lost.
if you want to start one then go ahead. just goodluck.
p.s we arnt closed minded

cheers

I'm a member of 4hv and a mobile junkbox was started, all was well untill some greedy
selfish (many expletives) stole it. Now we have a virtual junkbox, Chris Russell, the
owner of 4hv keeps a log of all items, you send something to him in return for an item you'd like.

So I'm all in favour of a junkbox, but the way 4hv runs it means that nothing can be
stolen

I know how they run it, and it would solve the problem. But who will host it here?

That would be a decent idea- and a better alternative to passing around a box.

Who would be in charge of it? Dave?

EDIT: dave is already hosting a junk box in the vet section ! :p lol

I'd host it, but i have no laser junk to start it with. The rules would be exactly the same as 4HV's.
