Well in regards to the beam I'd like burning capabilities and a viewable beam as well could those Spartan lasers do this?

well, the 1W will burn better and have a more visible beam. the divergence really isnt bad at all, can point at least 100m and be a good dot. i'd recommend the 400mW if you wanted it specificaly for pointing but otherwise 1W will probably be better.

I was looking at the thread about if you've ever gotten in trouble with your laser and started wondering if these lasers could be owned in the US more specifcly california

You can get them from places like novalasers and wickedlasers. A lot here have gotten lasers from them. Though, is it illegal to own? No. Is it illegal to import? YES. Do I care? No. Do you? I don't know. Will you get caught? Probably not. If you get caught, what will happen? The laser will probably just get confiscated and the company will send out another laser and try again. Worse things can happen, though not likely.

Your best option would probably be to get into one of scopeguy20's group buys. He orders all the lasers at once when the group buy is over and receives them all him self. He then ships to you after testing. Being that he is located in the US you will get the laser, no problem. Don't ask me how he gets them with no problem though. I have no idea lol.

Group Buy Thread: http://laserpointerforums.com/f55/gb-445nm-diodes-sale-45-a-51468.html

Another option would be to find someone on the forum that is selling a laser being located in the US.

P.S
The lasers scopeguy20 gets are from CNI. These are what you see sold from places like laserglow.com, novalasers.com, dragonlasers.com. I would choose one of these over wickedlasers, any day. Don't let the cool hosts from wickedlasers make your decision. :)

It's pretty simple. it's illegal to import COMPLETE non FDA approved lasers. It's not illegal to import approved lasers, or OEM laser components. Most of CNI's handhelds have the required safety features leading me to believe they're approved. And the ones that don't are considered OEM parts and not complete systems.

So the answer is he doesn't have problems with importing them because it's all on the up and up already. There's actually nothing stopping you from dealing with CNI directly either, other that their pricing for an individual is going to be extremely high. Ask for 100 of something though and you'll get much better per unit pricing from them. That's how group buy's work. To the manufacturer, it's just one person placing a large quantity order.

I just want to clarify something here. The original website in the OP was MegaLaserUK.com. From that I assumed the member was from the UK? I may be wrong but I think it was a fair assumption. If that's the case then importing lasers of effectively any power is not illegal here and the FDA rules do not apply so the only customs issues is duty to be paid on imported goods if they are over £25. If LaserDrumSticks is in the UK then I can help him out but I can't if he is in the US as I don't want to break FDA rules.

@ Moptsp - The link you have in your post there is to Glenn's 445 diode thread. I think you may have been looking for this one? -

Plenty of people will build you one and the quality and individual service is second to none. Consider that option too!

Have a look in the, 'Reviews', 'B/S/T', and, 'Pro-Shop', sections and I'm sure you'll find something you like without any of the commercial BS.

Sorry, I misread where you were from. That's what assuming does for ya!

The CNI pen type lasers are illegal to import into the USA. Though I'm not sure if Glenn is allowing US members to get them. Also the Spartan like laser couldn't be FDA approved as it has no safety features. At least the one Dragonlasers sales doesn't. Looking at the CNI pdf file on it, it has the safety features and is approved, so that confuses me a bit. I don't know which it would be that Glenn gets.

PDF: http://cnilaser.com/PDF/PGL-III-M-532.pdf

It may be that the spartan from DL is different from the PGL-III-M. So if the spartan from DL is indeed a bit different without the safety features then ordering it from them would create for an illegal import. I don't believe a portable laser can be FDA approved unless it has an LED indicator and key switch (like the one in the PDF.) Though I'm no expert on this matter, I could be wrong.
