I want a laser pointer(a blue/violet one that i watched some reviews (reviews for a denim laser ftw?) on and i was wondering if i would need safety glasses. one review said that his laser was 5mw and 405nm but... i dont know that the **** that **** means.. it can pop balloons and it can't light matches.. or so the review said.. one commenter said it seems like a 120? mw and someone else said it was 30-50? i dont want to play with my laser and go blind yanno? i hope that was innuendoey as possible, anyways, it looks really cool and i want it but i dont want to risk my balls cause im a gamer so would i need protection for a laser that has the energy to pop ballons but not to light a match? i assume some kinda of tech nerdo expert can make a good guess as to what range ¿mw/nm this laser is? I've only ever used cheap red lasers from Walmart so._. here is the link to a review of the laser i want http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HlbhO_VvF8&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Those lasers runs on double AA batteries . I think you won't need goggles for those . I doubt a laser that small can damage your eyes (don't point it directly of your eyes of course) . It might cause you temporary flash blindness tho .. Just be careful while using one :)

False. Any laser over 5mW can cause damage your eyes.and AAA's can run a lot...I have a 200mW that runs off 2 AAA's.

OwO . Didn't know that . I owe a couple of those lasers and none of them seems to hit 10mW :/ Oh well . Better get goggles this way :)

I think 405nm might be capable of damaging your eyes even under 5 mw due to it's dimness. So if you get hit by a 4.5mw in a dark room you might get damage due to your pupils being fully open and the 405nm wavelengeth is focused tinnier then say a 660nm laser(slightly). I had a defocused 405nm burn in a CCD camera even though it was a quick streak and a red didn't do that. Bother were the same power. 50mw.

When it comes to 405 the dot is deceptively dim.

To get an idea of it's real brightness shine it at a piece of paper marked with a yellow high lighter.

It's near UV-A too so who knows what exposure to low powdered 1-4mw 405nm might do over time if you get it in your eyes.

405nm laser diodes can be focused to an extremely small point and burn like the dickens, even a low powered one, be careful. I have a 5mw green laser from Laser Glow I recently purchased from a member here and even though measured to have an output just under 4 mw, I would never let this thing hit me in the eye, I bet it can damage my vision even that low. Yes, 405nm looks very dim because that wavelength is only 1 percent as bright to our eyes as green at 532nm is, deceptively weak yet will blind you in a flash.

My 40mwish ebay pen out does a green and a red 50mw unless they're on black.

Hell with a lens that focus it to a dot at like 1.5 inches it can write on wood like no ones business. Yet it looks deceptively dim until you shine it on your ceiling and realize how bright objects that glow under black lights look.

even my high powered green cant burn as fast on dark wood. Also 40 some mw of 405nm will make my skin feel warm. Like 110+.

It's not to be taken lightly as most things absorb it better.

some UV blocking glass/plastic may even reflect it at you while passing a green.

i apologize guys, i gave the wrong link, i was wondering why you guy were talking about aaa's?
i guess i am a noob, here's the correct link

as for all you talking about green lasers, this thread is not the place for you to post, thanks!
and if that laser is poor quality it would be appreciated if someone could recommend a more reliable laser(something that won't break too easy as i am very clumsy ) for around the same price(violet& rechargeable) that would be great.
again, sorry for the wrong link.

Don't agree with your name;)
Don't know what has happened lately with so many people thinking these inexpensive units aren't powerful and dangerous. Wrong, wrong, wrong etc...
I think we need a thread at the top of the forum in big bold strobe concerning inexpensive units and what you NEED to know!

Wrong concepts floating around OP, I think. The color of the laser itself has very little effect on the power output and its capability of tissue damage in your eyes. If the laser can pop balloons, it is likely at least 30mW. I would not be surprised if a flash of 405nm at 4mW could damage your eyes, due to your eyes being insensitive to 405nm and will not shrink your pupil as much in response to the 405nm light

I have a 300mW peak green laser that runs on AAA's. Do NOT underestimate the power that small lasers can produce. I know of button cell lasers producing over 150mW
