You need a test load and a DMM to properly test the driver.

yep
no test/dummy load?? using a diode to set current will likely kill the diode.
post some pics--there may be some confusion on this--? driver 'pressed' into pill??- the diode gets pressed into holder/heat sink- takes a pressing tool or something in place of tool to do it properly- those cans are soft and crush/dent very easily--
