Hot Potato

Still a laser newbie here, but I keep reading about how you guys (and chics?) are having heating issues with the diode and heatsink. so I was curios and did a search for micro fans. I have seen several sizes from 0.6" (maybe smaller) and up that run on 3v for around $12. Couldn't you mount it in a base attached to the bottem of the host using a watch batt to run it and to avoid 'noise' running through your driver. Drill exhaust ports below it and tapered inlet holes in the heat sink or holes running parallel in the sink to allow flow? Not sure what the CFM would be but maybe give you a longer run time. :thinking:

Wow man...That sounds like a seriously complicated build! You've got the CNC skills though. Me, I just buy big heatsinks and keep my duty cycles to less than 5 minutes, though I still don't get it hot at that point.

It'll be nice to see if this chimera of yours progresses.

I have a nearly infinite runtime on my 3W build... The batteries going dead is my only issue.
My friend was lighting his girlfriends cand'les with it for 45 minutes straight and it was fine.

It's a little too bulky for a "carry everywhere" laser though.
The driver heatsink is pressfit into the main heatsink, the main is friction fit to the host and the host clamps it together (thermal grease between) so the host carries a lot of heat away.
It was temporary too, slapped together a quickie 1.75"X1.75". I figured it would be too small...
I have another host with integrated fins and a 3" wide by 2" long heatsink that it was all going into but it hasn't been necessary :crackup:

Yea Grainde. But was thinking of making it inline with the focus adapter so that I can allow fog to flow through it for a "cool" effect. Please don't be in any hurry to see it. I broke my foot at work back in Nov. And have been on "light duty" since being back at work in early Feb. A 90lb 14"x2.2" piece of steel rolled off a 3ft high table and onto my right foot. Broke 2 metatarsels and fractured a third.
Hope that the thought inspires people to get creative with their lasers. Also I'l try to figure out something out so that anybody with a dremel and access to a hardware store can do this
