i was just talking to senkat and realized lasers have an intersted "tradeoff" in my opinion

personally i would rather have a low powered more rare color laser, say 473nm blue or 594nm yellow, or 405nm violet ... than a high power 532nm green, or any red.

part of the reason is i just love the color blue, and similar shades.

also i am paranoid about hurting my eyes or someone elses.

what do u guys prefer in this tradeoff, considering prices of course?

Re: High Power/Common Color vs. Low Power/Rare Col

I would love to see a laser that shifted from one color through the entire spectrum. I would have to say that I prefer power to the color. Don't get me wrong I would love to have a blue and yellow laser and at this point wouldn't really care if it was a high powered one. I also like to shoot my lasers a considerable distance and the lower powered one's are not going to go very far unless your looking at only playing around with these in the dark This is the reason I choose power over color. although I do prefer green to red anyday. so it's kind of a mixed question and answer.

Re: High Power/Common Color vs. Low Power/Rare Col

My quandary is that I like ANY visible laser color! ;D

It is unfortunate that colors other than red and green are so much more expensive per mW. I also think that red is underrated, maybe because of the ubiquitous nature of low-power red pointers, but I don't understand the low number of high power red handhelds offered, unless it's because of the lower beam visibility.

Yeah, I'm waiting for a blue at a decent price too. Maybe when laser TV technology kicks in, blue diodes will become more approachable.

Well, for me, deffinatly color is more important. I am actually selling all my high powers, so that (in the very near future) I can complete the collection of all colors that I have been eorking on for many years. ::) I am so close now, I can smell it!

I prefer power over color, sure don't get me wrong a blue laser would be sweet, but besides shinning it what else can you do. Now if you buy a high powered green, it not only looks cool but can do tricks as well.

I wouldn't count this as a "colour" and it's a fantasy but.. a BLACK laser! :D

at the current rate, you'll be able to have diodes for almost any primary and secondary color. the tech is starting to move so fast I'd say 5-10 years and dpss will go the way of the dodo for most things.

Except for high power apps! Bare diodes don't seem to do much better than 200-300 for single mode and even the strongest 808nm multi-mode pumps don't do much better than 5W. It'd be interesting to see a microscopic RGB portable though. Maybe even a small 660, 440 and ~532nm diode combined in a single small can.
