Heatsink for pen lasers

Turned up some heatsinks for "pen" lasers, will test it a bit later on to see what sort of Duty cycle I can achieve, I am hoping for 100%.

Picture shows my wicked 35mw Advanced with Heatsink fitted, also shown are a sample for Timelord's Viper and Senkat's 100mw red module. As they have power meters they will be able to accurately determine the duty cycle these things can extend to pen type lasers.
For those Interested, they are a simple push fit over the barrel and are turned from aerospace grade Ally bar that can be polished to a mirror finish.

those are simple swwweeeett. Nice job there tallaxo. Yur gonna make everyone go out and buy a metal lathe.

Very nice - you might want to consider selling some of these once the reviews are in...   ;)
you may want to add some thermal grease to the contact area

Someone very nice sent me some arctic silver thermal grease, and I wILL be using that to assist with mating the two items :) (Thanks, Steve !) I cannot wait to get this in, as a matter of fact, once I do, then I will be creating a housing for this red laser, and mounting it so that it can be used as a labby permanently. It is now off the market, as with this heatsink, the possibilities are endless with this little guy :) I will be scavenging the flea Market tomorrow for some suitable housings, or maybe buy some metal sheeting to mount it all in....VERY nice work, Jase - that is simply awesome !

Here's what I need for my DIY red laser.  Believe it or not the local machine shop wanted to charge me $45 for this!!  I've got a peice of bar aluminum that I can drill myself and hand sand down to the size I need for nothing.  Of course at the rate I sand it would take ummmmm FOREVER! I however don't need fins on mine as it's acting as a spacer to transmit the heat to the head of the flashlight. Fins would trap the heat in the space since there is no airflow.

My father who sometimes has a tendency to know a thing or two. (doggone it) told me that there needs to be a small place for the thermal grease to go when the temperatures increase and thins out the thermal grease. If there is no "place" for the thermal grease to go it will ooze out the top and bottom. Whatya guys think?

I can do that for you no problem. No Offense but dont try drilling bar without a lathe, the drill will wander and your hole will be on the P*ss. I have plenty of 1" Aluminium bar that I can use for this

I am using this as a spacer to transmit the heat from the module in my DIY to the head of the flashlight. That and to fill up space inside the head. If I could get my fins to go up and down the spacer from top to bottom instead of around the diameter that would be perfect but just the plug will work for dissapating lots of heat from that module. Mine gets really hot.

Ya know the more I think about it the more I realize I could have gone with a smaller diameter piece and used it for a heatsink without using the thing to transmit the heat to the barrel of the flashlight. I still think that having fins that go from top to bottom instead of the diameter would work good too.

Having fins going from top to bottom would be very technically VERY difficult to produce, think of the cuts as segments in an orange. They would start off thick on the circumference and taper down towards the centre if you are trying to fashion on a circular diameter. A CNC mill would be required to do this or a raw Aluminium casting. The only way you could get fins to run easily from top to bottom would be to mill Parallel fins in a square section of aluminium , and even that would require a CNC mill.
