hello,

maybe a dumb question: can i use heatsink grease (like the one used between processor and coller on computer motehrboards - see arctic silver 5) when i fit back my laser diode into aixiz module or is not necessary to use it. just fit (press) the diode into aixiz and go on....?

regards,

You can use a very tiny bit, but i don't think its really required as the diodes fit very snugly in there.

I put some in there just for kicks.

If you're going to use a heatsink, the grease will probably be a little more important there.  I covered the sides and back of the diode and placed the module into a heatsink I built.  Works nicely.  :)

Edit: you probably don't need to get the expensive stuff, this will work fine:

hello,

thanks for answers. is like i imagined. i asked about grease because i had only one concern: i am planning to mount 22x dvdrw laser diode into one aixiz module, without any other external heatsink method. does this built-in aixiz heatsink will be enough to cool 350mA-400mA current flowing to my LD for 30-40sec?

Well, i'd say you'll be pushing it. I dont think it will destroy the diode, but the whole thing well be noticably warmer after 30 seconds, and it's certainly not suitable for continous operation.

hi benm,

30 sec will be enough for what i want. duty cycles 30secs! i'm remembering that somwhere i saw some mini rings, to be used as extra heatsink for aixiz modules. now i'm looking to find them again but no luck. does anyone know abot it?

Wow I was just going to ask this question. Very scary. I'm starting to believe more and more I'm in the Matrix

Yes the grease does mater. It will decrease the operating temperature of your LD anywhere from 10 to 20 degrees F to as much as 36 degrees with a blu-ray or open can red. The grease i use is arctic silver since it is semiconductive and has a very fine application tip. Use 3 small bumps of it and smear on with a toothpick before pressing into an axiz module for best results.

I used heatsink compound (grease) on my BR diode before pressing it into the aixiz module.
I find it does help dissapate heat a bit better. I also made a heatsink using drilt out washers that fit along the length of the aixiz housing.
All the washers have the grease in between them and then are all squashed together in a vice before being fixed into palce.

I now get at least an hour of duty cycle before the heatsink gets too warm and it is running at about 170mA (output approx 125mW).

The whole module and heatsink is then fitted into an aluminimum box which acts as extra heat sinking in itself.
