There are however INSANELY strong rare earth magnets in them...

I had a old 5.25" full height drive with magnets that could almost crash fingers.

They can break bones, and will often give you blood blisters.  One thing to watch out for with them is to not let them collide with each other, as the impact can shatter them.  I suggest covering them with that rubber dip that's for tools and then they'll be slightly more wear resistant.

I think someone stole mine...
I have not seen mine since my uncle cut his hand with them, I warned him that they were strong so he brings is close to a piece of thick steel... it gets about 2" away and CLINK! it tares itself out of his hand and the sharp corner cut his finger.

I have a few small ones I pulled from drives. They are more powerful than normal magnets but they still aren't real powerful. I have one that is pretty big though. It would be close to the size of a AAA battery if you were to shape it into a cylinder.

I got 4 of those out of 2 old HDDs but they can't really break bones, I can sandwich my finger with them just fine without feeling any pain, though sometimes they snap together with a little piece of skin in between. That hurts and causes a little bleeding. :-/ They're really great for finding small screws that you dropped on the carpet :D

Man, magnets are so cool.

I'd love one of those mega powerful ones... but the thing is, I'd be scared crazy of it. I mean, I just imagine walking past one with your keys in your pocket, then having the magnet fly out at you... you'd get neutered :-X

It would be too intense. Unless you have a special setup, one of those magnets would be as dangerous as a 400mW laser you could never turn off.

Magnets are so cool. Anyone else have those Magnetix sets when they were smaller? You could make some epic stuff with them, provided you had enough.

Want some powerful magnets?

Check these babies out:

Specifically, the 3" x 3" neodymium cylinder... 800 pounds of pull

WTF?!?! They sell Uranium there... Granted you don't get much, I don't think it is a good idea. They may prevent you from getting a whole bunch but a bunch of terrorists could buy a little bit each and do something stupid.

Doesn't quite work like that ;)

What they would be selling there is just general uranium, this is a mix of the isotopes of uranium. Pretty much just the stuff you pull out of the ground.

To make bombs and reactors and stuff, you need enriched uranium. This is uranium where the normal mix you get out of the ground isn't suffice, and instead you concentrate it so you have a higher concentration of the more fissionable isotopes. And I tell you, this is way beyond what a civilian could do ;)

So really, it's harmless :) (Unless you shove it down someones throat and give them radiation poisoning).

I'd be more concerned with the fact that there's A ROCK IN MY THROAT rather than its radiation level.

Actually, if you digest even a tiny amount of highly radioactive substance it'll kill you ;) You could easily hide enough radioactive substance to kill someone in a tablet or a meal.

Of course, uranium isn't nearly radioactive enough to do those things. You'd need a really active substance with a low half life to do that. The more active something is though, the faster its activity will drop over time, so you'd need to hit your target fast.

And, if you're skilled, by the time someone is found to be dead all the radioactive substance would of decayed, meaning you've poisoned someone and left practically no trace :)

That may be true but you can do anything if you have enough money and/or know the right people. Al-Qaeda seems to have both of those.

Trust me, if it was THAT easy we would of already seen nukes around.

But the short answer is: it isn't. Not by a LONG shot.

The stuff they sell on the internet is WAY too impure and WAY to small to actually be usable. Even if you bought loads of it, you wouldn't get enough. You'd need to buy several tons of that stuff, and they don't have that much to sell, even if you had the money :) You'd need to get it direct, and that bit is watched like a hawk. No chance can you get away with stealing a few tons of uranium.

And then the enrichment, you need equipment worth millions and millions of dollars for this. Even if you have the money, you'd be very strictly monitored, as this is high end stuff.

Then, you'd need the technicians, laboratories, more material.... Now we're hitting the multi billions of dollars. If you start spending billions of dollars on uranium and materials, someone is going to notice.

So in short. NO FRICKEN CHANCE ::)
