A simple guide for everyone to enhance your posts, reviews and signatures.
Anything on here is free to use for you all, I am happy to make banners or help with signatures. If there are any mistakes please point them out, I'll change them :D
If there's anything you think I should add to this please say ^^
The basics are already availible on advanced options, such as:
(note, I will leave spaces such as [ color=...] so it does not actually code it, however in your post to get it to show in color do not leave a space ^.^)
Italics- [ i] and = italics
Bold- [ b] = bold
Underlined- [ u] = underlined
Size = Text

Font
You can change the font by using [ font="type font here"] TEXT
Highlight
[ highlight] text turns the text highlighted red, however useful this is..

Colour
LPF has it's colour sets you can use from the advanced settings, the general format is [ color="#000000"]text [ /color]. On here it is text [ /color].

Showing the code
This is something I should update this thread with ;p. allows you to see the code without it actually working. So I use noparse to show you how to bold something in code without needing spaces: bold text

Quotes
This is pretty easy, you can just click "quote" on someone's post. However using the code it is [ quote=username]
Links
Using advanced on a message you can do this. The code is: [ url="desired URL"]Text LPF To link with text. To simply display the link it is [ url]"link" http://laserpointerforums.com
Linking to a website with a picture - [ url="website url"]

so (this picture links to LPF);

Videos
To put a video on from youtube copy the code. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5rVsjSEuWk&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL. You then use [ yt] [/yt] (once again, without the space).

Pictures
Pictures always enhance your post. Add a few instead of writing a large amount of plain text, it makes it easier to read. (Not too large or the rest of us will get pissed ;)) Large pictures can lag and just be generally annoying. Find out more here.
To add pictures to your thread you can directly upload them via LPF, but if they are too large in size host them elsewhere, such as at Photobucket, ImageShack, Tinypic. There is also dropbox which can be used to store your media online. To get your pictures from there paste the IMG code on to your post. Watch out for exceeding bandwidth though.

Theese codes can be combined together. Such as [ size=3][ u][ color=yellow] text to make text.

Signatures
For signatures, some write list of their lasers or have animations / pictures. I think a long signature which is colourless is really boring so why not make it look a little more asthetically pleasing ^.^. Colours can be used to make it that bit more nice to look at such as "O-like 405nm 50mW. This highlights it a little. You can do the whole line in the laser colour, or just the nm.
Some people will make you banners for your signatures (such as me ;)) Here's an example I quickly made (not actually my lasers) ;
Example.gif

If you'd rather write a simple list for your signature you could structure it out better, so use bullet points.

Emoticons/Smileys
Theese are another way to enhance your post, they can alert people if you're joking, such as "Oh, you're such an idiot! ;)" Offence may be taken if the ";)" wasn't present. It also adds more to look at than just colour.
Using theese symbols is fun and another enhancement. You can search online for theese types of symbols but here's a few♥☺☀♪♂ ♀ ^^ =^.^= ◕ ‿ ◕[Theese are used ツ ッ
often, they are Japanese symbols meaning "tsu" not a smiley face T_T]

Freebies
Here are some things I have made, feel free to use them in posts etc. I can re make theese in different colours, please ask ^.^

Theese borders can be used to separate large bits of text ^.^

Thanks for reading, I hope it was good / helpful D: pls tell me if there's anything I've missed out, or that you'd like to see ^^
And oops, I've just noticed I have smudged the blue dot in the border seperation above, if anyone wants to use it and would like the blu to be fixed pls message me, I will re do it.

You can also embed youtube videos by placing its code (the bit between "?v=" and maybe "&featured...") from the URL between [ yt] and [ /yt], remove the spaces.

I personally don't care much for colors and flashy things, but thanks for the writeup.:beer:

Is there any way to strikethrough text?

"Oh, you're such an idiot!;) " Offence may be taken if the ";)" wasn't present.
Remember though not to abuse this, sometimes emoticons can't undo a genuinely sarcastic post,
and offence may still be taken.

My $.02. The more things like HUGE bold text and colors get used, the less they'll get noticed, so my opinion is things of that nature should be reserved . I also personally block signature images over 75 pixels high as well. Not everyone has 1080+ pixel height monitors after all.

To me, I think a good rule to follow regarding signatures is that they shouldn't be longer than roughly half the space the user's avatar+info in the left column takes up.

Great guide - THANKS :beer:

Could you describe how to include an image directly in the post. So far, I was only able to include my images as 'Attached Thumbnails', via 'Manage Attachments'. Do I have to upload my image to an external host?

Thanks a lot for the fast reply - now it's clear! I thought there is a possibility to display the attached images in full resolution.
1+ for you for the great guide and the fast answer!
