OK, I've got GOOD news, and BAD news...I'll give you the good news first...

Have you seen this spiffy heat sink? By none other than Aixiz, to fit their own 12mm modules -

OK, somebody needs to explain to them what a set screw looks like. But other than that, these babies look sweet! Nice size for price, too - about 1" wide, nearly as tall, and over an inch long! (Same length as a full Aixiz module) Two set screw holes, plus mounting holes to attach to something even larger if desired (like a scanner), or even a TEC!

So, what would you expect to pay for this beauty?

$20?

$24??

$30???

more????

Given the prices we often see for even generic heat sinks around here, any of those prices might seen reasonable. Hey, even a simple 1" slice of standard hex-shaped aluminum stock with only one set screw hole (and no mounting holes - that seller suggest you use "putty" to hold it in place instead), is gonna cost you $23 w/ship - and that was after they lowered the price!

So, how much do you think this bad boy is gonna cost?

Do you think you can afford...

$3.95!!! :takeit:

And that's the expensive "eBay" price! On their web site, it's only $3.50!!! (But you don't want to go that route right now - see below)

But how much is shipping gonna cost ya? How about $2.50 f/one! :yh:

Total cost (eBay) w/ship for quantity one - $6.45!!! :D

Buy more, and the combined shipping makes them even cheaper!

I've got one on order now, I'll do a full review once received.

But at that price, it really makes you wonder why they couldn't make a round one? Say, about 1" O.D., perhaps 0.5" or 0.75" deep, one or two set screw holes? The design would be even simpler than this one, so I would imagine they could manufacture such a thing for the same or likely even less price-wise!

And any product that works with / promotes the sales of, more of their Aixiz modules, is going to be a benefit for them!

And now, the bad news...

Like I said, these are even cheaper on their own web site. But when I tried to buy it from there, my Avast kicked-up a warning -

TROJAN HORSE!!!

Their site tried to hit me with a drive-by download, right before I was going to buy this item! (and thus enter my payment info!) :scared:

I took a look at the reported details, to make sure it wasn't a "false positive", and sure enough, it was sending me to D/L from a very dodgy-looking URL, with an India domain name that was just created Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010! :undecided:

[Confirmed - the name & GMAIL addy for the listed owner of that brand-new domain name is the same person & E-MAIL addy listed as the owner for multiple similarly-named known Malware distribution sites, located on the exact same IP address as this! :tsk:]

The specific Trojan Horse reported was: JS: Downloader-AHG [Trj]

So, it would appear that their site has been hacked!

Being that I would rather not hand-over my finances to hackers just to get a better price on a heat sink, I went to a different, secure PC, and ordered it at the higher price on eBay.

I also E-MAILed Dr. Maricle at Aixiz Monday evening, to let him know what had happened.

I need to give this PC a full scan w/some heavy-duty AV's now, to make sure Avast caught it before it did anything evil, and/or fix any damage that was caused as a result.

While I have used their modules/etc. in the past, this is my first time dealing with them directly, and I am curious to see how they respond to my inquiry. Given the extra cost & time/effort incurred as a result of this, I wonder will they a) toss something extra in with my order (like a 405 lens) to make-up for the cost & trouble?; or b) only offer to reimburse the price difference I had to spend by using eBay?; or c) just tell me "tough luck!"? I haven't prompted them to do anything, just informed them what had happened, so however they react will be on their own incentive.

But the best way to judge a company's customer service is not when everything is going smoothly, it's when there's a problem - and given the rather unusual and serious nature of this problem, it will be interesting to see how they attempt to resolve this. Either way (good or bad), how they rectify this will likely end-up as an interesting story in the "Reviews" section!

The heatsinks being sold on LPF are usually from >machined< quality aluminum,
hence the higher prices...

These little heatsinks look to be made from a molding or extrusion process.

While im not saying they are not good, the quality of material and overall
fit is not the same as a heatsink cut on a mill..

They are a cheap alternative, and have been priced accordingly..
