Hey all, Semiconductor Today has a good article this month on green laser diode progress. Even being brand new, it's already slightly dated in a couple of ways (yeah, the research is moving that fast, a tech magazine released this very month is already a little behind), but it seems to be a great overview of the problems and solutions with getting green laser diodes.

Also some handy charts of where everything is at with the different research groups (it covers several companies and one university group).

I have only scanned it so far, I haven't read every detail, but so far it's a good mix of the hardcore technical writing and still being accessible to those without as much knowledge.

For the link, it opens a virtual magazine, and you can click on the headline about green to go straight to the article. Or, the article stats on page 62.

Alternatively, I've attached a pdf of the article. Since the forum won't take pdfs, I just changed the extension. Download the file, then go change the extension from avi to pdf, and it should open fine.

The name of the magazine is "Semiconductor Today"?!!

I couldn't be more excited about green diodes, but this is way out of my depth. I'm sure it's a great read for someone who understands it though ;)

You say we will be able to buy green diodes?

Not for now, maybe in a few years we will be seeing holographic CDs, writers and burners, those will use green and blue laser diodes, but it will take time. Buying laser diodes of manufactures in small quantities is very expensive, upward of the $1000 each.

But this is good news; it's a step forward.

I would love to see compact greens with low power consumption and low heat output. By far my favorite wavelength due to beam visibility :D
