Not to mention CNI's jump from depending on who you got your quote from on the 589 PGL-C $800 just 18 months ago to $1150.00 now.

I was encouraging Gray from JL to get in the yellow game which he said he was going to look into making 589 modules themselves or buying them in bulk from CNI and modifying the PLE to fit. So maybe people should send Gray some interest in this and he would see how he could really make a lot of sales because they can ship to the states.

It really would be great if some other companies got into the 589nm game. Every business needs a little competition to continue driving innovation and keep prices honest. Right now CNI are pretty much free to charge whatever they want.

Exactly! And is what we are seeing from them and their re-sellers. I told Gray that it seems like JL is a much more liked company than DL or CNI and I think people would rather buy 589's from them rather DL who's customer service has been quite dick-ish to more than a handful of people who have bought their 589's. Probably because they know they have the market cornered and don't have to make good on underspec lasers, or even be polite about concerns and inquireys to this wl. ie. RHD got royally screwed by DL on his 589 purchase.

Competition is exactly what we need to happen with this wl. Igt would be good if people sent Gray a polite encouraging message so he could see how many people would be interested in JL getting into yellow wl's. Or maybe just voice you support here and he can see for himself. He was very open to the idea but I took a hiatus from the forum and hobby after we spoke so never followed up on his looking into this.

They'd have to make 589nm modules by themselves then. Buying them from CNI still means they control the yellow market :(

I do agree we need some more competition out there. Tons of companies have disappeared lately :(

My 50mw 589 DL that I got for my birthday cost $445 shipped.

Now they're like 550 and thats without shipping.

If you can get one get it.

if they ban DL from imports well any member selling could cite it as a reason to ask 500 for a used unit.

The thing is, 589nm infinitely more complex than even the 473nm process. While they can be built with bulk components, they would require 2 separate Nd:YAG crystals, and a bunch more optics, meaning that the price would be insane. CNI doesn't have the 589nm market cornered, they have the handheld 589nm market cornered, because they can coat their crystals to lase on 2 lines at once.

Unless JL wants to invest some serious $$ into the project, they are pretty much going to have to order from CNI. So while you might get a Jetlasers 589nm in the future, you'd still more than likely be buying a CNI laser.

Just my 2¢
