Found some decent 18650 unprotected batteries.

Did a google for unprotected 18650 batteries and accually are harder to find then protected.

Just got my DX200 which use unprotected batteries and will stick with them as this is what they meant to use.

I know some say you can use protected, but they don't fit properly as they are 1-2mm longer so your cap won't fit properly and run the risk of damaging your laser.

These are a well known trusted brand and much better quality then the chinese batteries.

Yes, in general. Unprotected cells can rupture and "vent with flames" if they're subjected to strenuous charging conditions (ie draining them too deeply or charging them too much, charging under extreme heat or cold) or if they are subjected to very heavy current draws (ie shorting the battery)... Look up "lithium battery fire" on youtube to see how this is a bad thing.

Apparently for this laser though, the ~1mm the protection circuitry requires is too big to fit... So no choice I suppose, but to use unprotected cells.

Luckily, as long as you never discharge a cell past some 2.8v, and avoid those other things too, you should never have a problem.

By the way, unprotected 18650's can be salvaged from laptop batteries. Here's one with 8!
