Hey all, this is my first post on the forum here, so I hope i'm doing everything alright. I'm looking into getting my first laser above 5mw, but I'm not planning on going over 100mw, and also, I'm interested in getting a violet/405nm laser. So, im just wondering what the capabilities of a few different 405nm pointers are, specifically 50mw and 80mw, and If i could accidentally burn myself with either of those. And also, some help on what is a good beam diameter and divergence would be helpful.

I am most likely going to buy from lazerer or rayfoss, possible dragonlasers.

Hey there nitsuawebb,

405nm huh? That's a pretty interesting & dim wavelength at the same time. Is this the first time you own 405nm? If it is you'll see it can fluoresence on pretty much any white surface.

Now, skip Lazerer since there is no guarantee you'll even get what you payed for. Dragonlasers, while good seems like they are out of stock for the 405nm lasers & have been for awhile. Rayfross or O-like are pretty good but don't expect amazing quality!

Now for burning, 405nm will be better at burning due to it's shorter wavelength and 50mW-80mW of 405nm can definitely cause a burn so be careful! Make sure to buy goggles! If you need a link to some quality ones($50) let me know! :)

I have done a lot of research ( which you should too ) Protective eye ware is a must with anything over 5mw. Ive shopped around quite a bit trying to figure out where my next purchase will come from. It seems that laserbtb.com is recommended by many on this site. They have a 405 100mw for 40$ HL 405,445,450nm. Just out of curiosity what do you like about the 405 wavelength?

Thanks for the feedback, both of you. I have played around with my friends 5mw 405nm, and I really liked the color it gave off as well as the ability to do burning without having to be in the 100s of miliwatts, so that's mostly why I'm looking into violets.

I'll definitely check out laserbtb, and I will also buy some goggles of course, I'm thinking the LSG02s from dragonlasers, which seem to be in stock.

And Greenlander, when you say don't expect amazing quality from rayfoss and o-like, are you saying don't expect high quality externals, or are you saying their actaul specs aren't up to their labeled specs?

Hey nitsuawebb,

5mW of 405nm burnt? 5mW's of 405nm won't do any sort of burning & is too dim to be noticeable so tell your friend to be careful with it.

What I meant by "don't expect quality" is that their lasers are fine & work well, but if you have the extra cash it's worth it to buy from a more reliable company or members on these forums :p

Oh no no, my friends 5mw can't burn anything, I'm just saying that I like the fact 405nm's only have to be around 50-80mw + to burn. What I liked about my friend's was the color haha.

Oh whoops lol.

Yeah, it being a lower power certainly is good for your eyes but do make sure to get quality goggles since 50mW-80mW is plenty to do damage

Well I decided to go ahead and buy the RF405-80mW-BLP from Rayfoss. It's a pen design, which I like, and it's also only $42. I know this means it's not going to be great quality, but I'm okay with that. If I get more into lazing I'll definitely put in the extra bucks. I haven't seen a single review on this model, so I'll do a follow up on it when I get it. Thanks for the help!

My next wl was 405 after green and I have to say it's my favorite.

80mw should be plenty to burn when focused just watch yourself always wear googles when burning , especially if you have to focus it with an external lens you won't want the reflection hitting your eye.
