Anyone know wether they are visible laser diodes or IR?

Cheers

Should be visible. To my knowledge, all DVD diodes are visible red. they should have decent power, since they are burner diodes.. Not all drives have diodes that are in 5.6mm packages, though, so you may run into trouble there.

No, I did not find your post offensive at all :D

I felt I was slightly rude to just come into the thread and randomly post that the way I did .

Regards :D

DVD-Ram has a different way of distributing the data on the disk, but as far is i can tell the actual diode could/should be exacty the same as in ordinary DVD writers. I doubt dvd ram sleds would generally be available, let alone lower priced then dvd-writers, but if you can get your hands on some at a good price, they seem worth harvesting.
