The problem with that logic is that you put too much faith in the 'general public' reading the whole thread. 99% of the non lpf members that might have stumbled over it on google would have stopped at the 'hey I can use a high power laser to get free crap' initial post and not read any farther.

Threads like that have no place on LPF. They serve no purpose other than to put bad ideas in peoples heads.

I understand that, I just expect Darwins theory to come into play for people like that.

darwanism unfortunately doesn't work anymore. Too many warning labels and lawyers these days.

I was more referring to the fact it takes fairly extreme acts of stupidity to get ones self killed now days as opposed to say 100+ years ago when even moderately stupid acts were usually fatal.

Has any one ever seen Idiocracy? Sadly that movie is true! Survival of the fittest has ceased to exist for the most part in the developed world (in the sense that the strongest and smartest survive and the dummies die of starvation or get eaten or killed by the stronger.) Not that I think my dumb friends deserve to die or any thing thats what part of becoming a developed civilization is about, but laws have been put in place to protect some one regardless of how moronic and possibly weak they may be. Granted in some extreme cases no amount of law, safety harness, air bags, or the little plastic things you put in electrical sockets to avoid little kids from trying to start the electrical socket with their parents car keys (yes i've read a few cases of adults dieing this way.) will save some people! Thats where the Darwin awards comes in! Again like Qume said even 500 years ago something like forgetting to shut the door on your shelter would more than likely lead to some animal killing you! Now people can leave there doors open 24 hrs a day and despite what most fear mongering american news tells you, you would be more often than not safe in doing so! Though I don't think this is a Darwinian theory discussion thread so I digress!!

Fittest always wins .. only the definition of 'fittest' changes .. once it is strong guy, once it is smart guy, once it is guy with resistance to disease, once it is guy who was on the right place .. and maybe the whole intelligence experiment is just a dead end of evolution, as we might simple wipe ourselves out. Just don't say it does not work, because it can't not work. Who survives, survives.

-1 for myself for off topic.

I work in schools, that comic isn't really very correct.. Average education, at least in public schools... IS way down. 'No child left behind' is a freakin joke. All it does is drag the smart kids down to the level of the dumbest ones.. and advances dumb ones when in fact they should have been held back for not comprehending the material taught. It's also a highly 'it doesn't matter if you succeed as long as you try' environment, which is retarded as well. It in no way teaches kids how things will be in the real world. It only for the most part prepares them for lifelong careers at mcdonalds. Making kids 'feel good about themselves' often has top priority over actually giving them a good education.

Bleah.. another tangent but this whole thread kinda strikes a nerve with me. sorry.
