Maybe you can replace the <1mW diode with a long open can and read barcodes from across the room ;)

Hand held barcode readers never had HeNe in them. Some older readers that were built into the counter/tables had (and still have) a HeNe at its heart.

The older models of hand held barcode readers had an array of red LEDs... later on
the technology changed to red Lasers. The one you have has a Keyboard interface.
If it is functional.... you should be able to hook it up in parallel with your keyboard
and when you scan a barcode it will enter the numbers of the barcode as if you typed
them in.. ;)

No... all you need is a 5 pin DIN to PS/2 keyboard adapter an it will work on a computer
with a standard PS/2 Keyboard port.

This is in response to the litigious nature of our society.  Companies (and the government) are so frightened of litigation that safety regulations are WAY over the top.   It is the same mentality that has a warning on clothing to avoid ironing the clothes while wearing them!  Then you have to factor in that legislatures and owners of companies do not understand lasers.  Also, just the "feeling" of dread that the general public experiences any time they are exposed to "radiation" would force this type of expression.  Finally you have the need of the government to "crank up" the fear of the world in the population.  If there is nothing to fear from the world, there is very little need for government ;)

If it outputs a line that flickers slightly, it has a vibrating mirror that can be used to make liquid skies. Other than that... ebay resale?

Donate it to a 7-11 in Uganda.
I heard they are still using abacus's to total up their beer and beef jerky sales.

I got it from my girlfriends mom. She worked at a TV station were it was used to scan bar codes on tapes. The station closed and she grabbed it for me. It was working when she removed it.

Anyone want it??? It would just be another thing collecting dust at the bottom of my loooong list of projects. Just send me the postage and it's yours.

EDIT: It's gone...

Yes it is free, but I'd like to keep the shipping to the US only. Plus this thing is heavy. Shipping it to another country would cost more than its worth and I dont know how the trade laws work.
