I have heard that ripping "used" DVD burners apart will give you a stronger more powerful diode then just a bare unused diode. I used to run my red burner at only 100 ma's ,but when I realized that I could run it at 250 ma's it got much brighter then my other reds.

I wouldn't of thought so...

Since there is so much variation on the power intake and output diodes can take, it would be hard to test this.

Yeah, :-/ It's just that the red was very bright and that it was much better at burning then the one with Greg's newer diodes. Brighter too.

While the older diode only ran at 250 the newer one was at 350 ma's.

Although it died when i finished my 803T, the current must have spiked or something. :-?

It died of a broken heart. One look at that violet beam and it couldn't stand to live looking like it did any more :-/

It's a sad story, really, but one that repeats itself in enthusiasts homes all around the world :'(

Rest in
Peace,

It is now another phr-803T laser. :'(

"Diodes require more current to output the same amount of light when they degrade". The answer is They get weaker.

They might get stronger with TIME (as opposed to AGE). Meaning, the diodes from this age are stronger than equally priced diodes bought last year ;)
