Diode broken under mysterious circustances

A month ago I bought a lpc-826 (from e-Bay), rated for 200-300mw. That was perfect, I drived it with a lm317 and worked fine (386ma). I runned without a heatskin, but with 12mm module for about 5 seconds. The module got warm, the negative pin was unsoldered and got led. I think that 5 seconds wasn't enought for burn it, what do you think? :thinking:

It looks like its dead in all honesty! Are you sure it didn't short out?

I'm not sure what you mean by that! I'm guessing your using some sort of translation thing?

Hes sad to hear its dead and said that he didnt short it out. He was apparently testing a homemade module spring (possibly for the lens) before it broke (died). ;)

You shouldnt really run diodes in only the module esp. at high current settings for the diode. You were also using one of the std. aixiz modules which are not as good as the copper modules from eg. DTR. To be honest though 380 mA is not that high and the module should have coped with the excess heat.

A couple of questions:

Did it work fine and then LED after desoldering the negative?
Did you take static precautions?
How long did you leave the soldering iron on the pin, whilst both soldering and desoldering?
Was the diode lasing at full power before it LEDed?
How well was your LM312 driver soldered together and could you have had any shorts?

Thanks for your interest! Ok:

Yep, it worked fine at full of power and suddenly negative pin desoldered itself.
I tried again without solder it, only making contact with negative pin and was broken.
My static precautions were don't touching LD cables and frecuently touch my heater (the water cables are connected to ground).
In the soldering I tried make it furthest possible from the diode, and for the lm317 I will try upload a photo with all conexions.

^^^Not a problem the thread is only a couple of weeks old and he added info. Posting is only frowned upon if the thread is dead and somebody wakes it again (necroposting) with useless info such as " Thats cool", "I want one of those" etc.

Bumping is perfectly fine BTW and is common on sales threads. :beer:
