I know that most handheld laser devices have the battery/batteries going in into the case negative side first; putting that end closest to the diode. And other lasers are the other way around, with the positive side going into the case first; e.g., IIRC, the old-style Pulsar (I'm not familiar with the newer model Pulsar) and aren't the Sonar cases this way as well?

What's the reasoning for the difference in battery orientation?

On many lasers like the pulsars, the case acts as a direct connection to the case of the diode. In the case of the pulsar, the diode's case is the negative connection so the tailcap conducts that up to the housing. All pulsar lasers are like this. With the pen greenies it seems to always be the other way around. Not sure about the sonar though.

A lot of DPSS portables use a c-mount diode where the c mount is screwed into the heatsink/case, and that connection is positive on all the c blocks I seen. That may be the explanation for a lot of the greenies.

Generally, and don't hold me to this!, you know the negative connection is the end with the spring.
