Re: Drone Attack Laser

Don't forget in public you have no expectation of privacy. You may be video taped in public without your consent. The blurred faces you see on TV is a courtesy, it is not a requirement. Then you also have the crazy laws such as; If you have your window open and someone can see inside, and you are nude, it is your fault and you could be charged for public indecency. This would indicate that if a drone were to fly over your home, and you were nude in the backyard... it is your fault. I don't like this, I don't agree with it, but it would likely be the correct answer in most cases. I believe I read something about the drone cannot be hovering "over" your property, as that would be an infringment. If it were in your neighbor's yard, this would not be the case.

Re: Drone Attack Laser

There are those onesies and twosies out there that use their "drones" to piss people off. I use my DJi 3 quite a bit, but only to take family video and photos. There was an article a few weeks ago about using acoustic devices to disrupt the drone's internal gyros. The only thing a high powered laser could do is damage the image sensor.

Re: Drone Attack Laser

So I just registered here and, following the forum guidelines, searched for "drone" before posting my introduction thread and question. I'll get to the introduction after this, but I just wanted to add my 2cp.

Firing a weapon at an aircraft is not illegal because there are people in it, it's just illegal to fire a weapon at an aircraft period. The FAA definitely classifies your average "drone" as aircraft, hence the commercial ban on their use. They also only grant an exemption to sUAS (drones) use for commercial purposes if the operator is a licensed pilot.

I also think that people are overplaying the privacy issues. Yes, they are present, but commercially available drones are a terrible way to accomplish that. If I really wanted to spy on someone, I would put a camera in a tree in their backyard. It's also legal for someone to fly over your property and take footage, as long as they are over 100ft and not violating "a reasonable expectation of privacy."

^^ All of that is intended to sound a little confrontational and aggressive. I'm building custom drones for my full time job as a fire fighter and have already seen the enormous potential for their use at work. I'd like to drive home that there are plenty of laws and regulations that prohibit drones from being used for the vast majority of their current misuses, but the problem is developing a technology that will be able to enforce those laws. You're not going to stop the government or the military from doing what the please with the technology, but if anyone else really wants to know what you're having for dinner or how big your last bowel movement was, they probably just have to check your facebook.

I really am a big believer in personal privacy and I like the idea of using a laser to disable (not damage) the camera. If you guys are serious about putting something together, I can help you build a "turret" that will track and aim at most of your $600+ drones. The people that know how to secure their communications with the drones are typically not the ones doing irresponsible stuff with them.

Wow, long first post and rant. Anyways, off to the introduction...

Re: Drone Attack Laser

First of all, what do you mean "it's been a while"? This is your first post.

Just to let you know that having more than one account active at any time is a bannable offense. No alt accounts.

Second, I think you're way too paranoid. Drones spying on you? I don't think so, but assuming it's true, what can they possibly steal?

Matter of fact, the majority of the drones I've ever seen where made by hobbyists for areal photography or car parking assistance or just plain old flyin' the drone around. What harm is there in that?

Eh as a RC enthusiast, I feel that I should point out that it should be called a quad/hexa/octocopter. Calling it drone gives the hobby a negative image and most of these "drones" need to be controlled by a human and are not autonomous.

Not to mention, "drones" used by police and civilians are basically a normal camera attached to a multicopter platform and can not see through walls or zoom in on objects far away. Most of these drones use SD video and from a distance of 20 to 50 feet, you may not even be able to make out the face of someone.

The drone/quadcopter point is technically accurate, but where I'm coming from, "Drone" just simply sounds much cooler. Though I never thought about it the way you say.

Hexacopter sounds cool as heck :p

+rep for good info. I just can't swallow the "They're spying on us through walls because of reasons" without at least some solid proof before my eyes. Sorry guys.

Yeah I dont believe that either. The link was a prototype that barely works. I don't see how you can attach that to a UAV and I dont think that device would work from 20000 feet up.

Re: Drone Attack Laser

@ the OP & speedwagon-

this is a stupid thread- the OP could not possibly afford a laser that can do what he wants- the target would need to be VERY stationary and the laser would need to be on a tripod the lens would need to be aimed directing at the laser
AND even then, I doubt you would get the deisred effect and for sure that would be equally illegal or moreso--

BESIDES- members w/o a completed personal profile including at least general loction should be ignored until the follow thru and NO respected member should condone any actions that reflect badly on us and the forums-

sure ...a complete profile is not manditory and neither is giving out advice ---

AND admin/mods needs to hear about any members with dup accts asap

Some new members are clue-defficent- and dont realize really how things are here
it more important that they add thier location that I think you understand & I dont intend to expain it to you ATM

BUt thanks for the 'kid' remark IF that were only true
facts are ...not many members here are older than me

I'm not neccessarily smarter tho--+

Outdoor Public display of lasers is not legal- or at the very least not reccommended
save that for out of town.
Its considered to be an assult if you lase people
and reckless endangerment if you lase a car/truck etc

Hate to derail this thread too much, but hak is anything but a "kid" here at LPF. He is a long standing veteran, who knows what he is talking about.
Just take a look at his join date, his post count, and his +reputation in the community.
He knows laser safety rules better than most on this forum, and when he asks for location it's to help us direct our answers more accurately.

Also, when a new member fills in his personal info., hak is usually the first to reach out with a +rep for that person.

Re: Drone Attack Laser

That didn't work out too well for one Kentucky Man; he was Arrested for Shooting Drone Out of the Sky:

William Merideth arrested after shooting down $1,800 drone hovering over sunbathing daughter - Washington Times

Assuming you could take out the drone with your laser, it would likely fall into the same issue as the Kentucky Man encountered. On a lessor level, if you damage the camera, you could be open for damages to the drone.

Bob Diaz
I think you have confused shooting a drone with discharging a firearm in a residential area.

Re: Drone Attack Laser

TY for that BTG

The majority of members I 'attack mercilessly'- are contacted ONLY by PM and the vast majority of them do agree - add info into thier proflie and we MOVE on very quickly
so PLEASE PM anyone wanting to add thier two cents -ask the poster etc how THEY feel about me- as it is NOT about you- all those recently hearing from me are NOW my friends and I am often the first friend they get- any uglyness from me is quickly forgotten and those with valid reasons for leaving out info i always respect and
understand.

I do regret the ones I contacted who DID fill in thier profile but simply forgot to click
save' as I did that as well once long ago and completely forgot that-

I do apoligize to any I had been unkind to and will do my best to keep that from happening again---

Re: Drone Attack Laser

Whoa
chill Vxkid..
we are not the ones with the said drone and what you propose may be actually a felony while any invasion of your privacy is more likley a felony..

in good faith none of us at LPF can condone such uses for lasers as it will never do any of us any good & may hurt you in ways you did not think of.

BUT i DO hope they leave you alone
