I often run through craiglist looking for things that interest me and see what people are selling them for. Well tonight I happen to come across this listing for a 8 watt blue laser. WTF 8 watts.. I opened up the post and its a .8 watt Chinese 405 nm laser that you can get on ebay.. This guy is looking to get 150 bones out of it. He paid almost 300 for it. I have seen this laser on ebay for under 150. I must say These are the guys that scare the besniky out of me.. Here is the link Laser 8 Watt blue laser has any one else run into these kind of IDIOTS on craigslist or other such sites.

Yes, I am amazed at the number of imbeciles I see online every day. You can't fit 8W into a laser that size and if it was 8W it would be worth a small fortune. This person may be Chinese or is just an imbecile.

The worst thing is that people with absolutely no common sense tend to buy these things. Then shine it at aircraft, people, animals etc.

Part of the problem is probably that the average person knows nothing about lasers. If you didn't know anything about lasers 8W is believable and doesn't sound like much or sound like it would even be dangerous. Some people don't know that coherent light of a single wave length in a tiny beam isn't ordinary light. We all know how dangerous any class 4 laser is and yet it's not so much power but the average person doesn't understand this. I know a guy that works at Boeing and his wife (in her 50's I think) didn't even know what a laser is! I think they should teach kids in science class about lasers, I don't remember learning anything about lasers in school at all. They are after all one of the most important technological developments ever.

All very true. Another problem in the U.S. is that Joe Publics' only thought in regard to Watts, is in terms of a lightbulb he screws in.

100 watt is normal, 40 watt is dim, 8 watts is a joke.

Joe public probably stuck a light bulb up next to it and said, "Hey, this is about this bright, it must be about an 8 watt laser"

At least that is my scenario :)
