Hi. I know that most lasers have a remote connector key. I have connected a 3.5 mm jack cable to the laser and I put a switch on the other side of the cable, so that when I close the switch the jack shorts out and the laser turns on.
Do you know if it is possible to do this by connecting the jack to a computer and turn on the laser via software?

Uhmmm, still no answers here, but I though that a relay and a Raspberry Pi (or an Arduino) should do the job, just for you to know.

Yep you need a relay of some sort, be it electro-mechanical or solid state. Triggering method depends on what type you use and how you interface it to what device. You're on track with the uC choices, just search stuff similar to "activate a relay with ____ from computer/phone" where ____ is the uC of your choice.

With an arduino you could make it controllable by a web interface, could even have an xy axis for aiming if you wanted, but that's really not my area as I've never had my hands on one so that's all I really know.

People have already used arduino to control relays for home automation over Ethernet, just have the relay control the laser and you have a web interface for your laser :)
