Hey guys, [See update below OP]

So I have finally decided to finish and go through with a host design I had in mind some while back. No it's not the lightsaber one with brass parts, but next best,

So far, here is a 3D render of the finished thing:
Host01.jpg

Host is not available for sale YET, this is only a concept and only a prototype is being produced today, to see if we can smooth out any bugs.

Batteries next to it are 16340, for comparison. So you may see this is a small, compact host.

Allow me to show you the half cut-away:
Host_side_by_side.jpg

Note the hidden set screw under the focus ring, 17mm board socket, enough room behind the diode for any other driver, tailcap with clicky switch.

The first prototype of this host which I'll name "Phobos" (simply because it sounds cool) is currently being machined, and it'll be maybe 2 weeks until I start selling them at large.

In short,

12mm bored - accepts Aixiz modules
16340 and 18350 powered - will add longer barrel to accept 18650 later
Accepts 17mm boards and driver boards behind the diode
Has it's own focus adapter
Standard 14mm clicky switch tailcap

So, in these two weeks before it's officially released , I'd like you all to post some questions, feedback and ideas of what to improve/change/remove.

It will all be incorporated into the final design before being offered for sale.

So tell me what do you think! :)

UPDATE

Here we go:

Excuse the God-awful Aixiz head used, I didn't have any other except that old banged-up one...

Okay, so if you like what you see, final price will be $40 with worldwide shipping included. Aixiz module and lens are NOT included. Tailcap switch is (not visible on photos).

Just post below that you want one as soon as they are avalailable, which is around two weeks, and I will make the host now and just finish it with threads when tap/dies arrive.

No up-front payment, you will be charged when the host is fully finished and about to be shipped out.

Pre-orders so far:
StokTT - 1
Clif - 1
Sigurthr - 1
Jeff - 1
rhd - 1

Re: Introducing new host - Phobos

Awesome host design. I really like that. It kinda looks like a really nice version of those eBay lasers that have the flimsy side button. I can't wait to see it all finished!
Any estimate one price? Or will that depend on labor?

Price... I dunno. I was aiming at say, $40.
That's about the same value of heatsinks that could have been made from the same material (actually a tad more).

It does take a lot of material and time to get one done. So yeah, it's pricey.

Good news is that any hosts made for longer batteries won't cost much more since they require no additional works, just a longer midsection.

That's actually a really great price for a host like that. I can't wait to see it finished!

Phew, thought you were gonna say it's crazy :p

Thanks man, me either, a prototype is about to be finished today, without the threads though, but exterior is exactly the same as finished product.

Will update ASAP.

Re: Introducing new host - Phobos

I have actually been looking for a host EXACTLY like this for a while now. As someone else said it looks like the cheap ebay lasers (obviously this one is better). I was going to buy one of the cheap ebay ones but unfortunately none of them are really fit to put a 445 in. I'm looking forward to these being available.

Hey Eudaimonium,

Great designs and renditions as always, will definatly be a nice piece.
Don't take offence to the suggestion, but I think that the host would look even better if you had thinner fins, and more of them in that head area (Say 5-7 fins?) Offcoarse, not to the point where they are too flexable and easy to wreck.

Or are you restricted to 2 fins from the width of your parting tool?

Cheers.

Re: Introducing new host - Phobos

Thanks for the great comments, guys! :)

I have done the head + focus ring today, battery barrel and tailcap uhh, well tomorrow is New Year's Eve and family is coming over and all, and I'm pretty sure we'll all be very happily drunk, so I guess update will be in two days or so.

@ GBD, Yeah the fins are restrited part because of the tool, but I could cram another fin or two in there, however that'll just take additional time to machine out, for basically the exact same functionality. Aethethics are also disputable, personally I prefer fewer fins, gives a more robust look and feel to a host.

Though, if people would like more fins, I can offer two options for head design, one with more and one with less fins.

Thinner fins and more of them would increase the time required to machine the host which would probably result in a small price increase.

EDIT- EUDAIMONIUM already beat me to it.

eudaimonium are you taking orders for the hosts yet or is it just going to be first come first serve when they're available.

Beautiful host!

When you release an 18650 version you can count me in for a purchase! That is for sure!

Would knurling on the barrel be available? I always like hosts with a good grippy feel where your hand goes.

Re: Introducing new host - Phobos

I don't think taking orders just yet is a very good idea, I do have to wait two weeks or so for the tap/dies to arrive so the hosts can be finished. Could take a while, and you know, post office during holidays, may end up running late, I don't want people pissed over it.

RHD, looking forward to it :)

Sigurth, nope, I don't plan on buying a knurling tool anytime soon, but if people express a lot of interest, I'd look into getting it. For now I'm going with Google-insipired minimalistic design focused on function, not looks.

Speaking of looks, what's this Ebay laser you guys mention that this host looks like?
