Sweet i'd love to get one of those when they come out, just bought a plasma about a year ago though, $500 I doubt the laser can match that price.

Somehow hackers will make a terrible TV virus that raises the voltage and the lasers get as bright as possible and blind the person watching tv lol.

So would this create a purpose for blue and green laser diodes, or would they (The TV manufacturers) still use DPSS lasers?

They'd probably still use DPSS, but no doubt they'd be investigating direct diodes for a more reliable and neater way to do it :)

Which means they'll pump money in, do the research, get the product and mass produce it. Which means the same as 405nm diodes, they'll become cheap :D

I think, by the size of the module the red is also DPSS .

They TVs would be thinner if they put the lasers one on top of each other instead of side by side .

You mean raise the current.

They are currently developing diodes for laser displays - Me and thecheat (He's another oldie... been around even longer than me) have been in contact with Nichea about it. Of course, they're being really vague about the whole thing, but they have successfully produced 100+mW 473 and 488nm diodes, and are working on producing more powerful, more efficient green diodes so they can be used.

Those TV's look amazing, BTW. :D

Probably not, it probably just has a big heatsink.

Don't those diodes have ridiculously short lifetimes though?

Well, I think it would be DPSS... Diodes don't have very good beam specs, obviously, and that'd probably make for a crappy picture...

And no, the lifetime on those diodes is reportedly fairly long - You can't make a product that's gonna die that quickly... And they definitely ARE using these for the pocket-size laser projectors that are coming out in a year or so, so I think they're getting around that pretty well.

If you can pose as a company, you can get a sample from Nichea for $2000.

That'd be a helluva DIY to screw up on.  :p

That actually isn't too bad if you have the expertise to successfully make a high quality DIY pointer out of it. Think about how much you could sell a well made 100+mw 488nm/473nm pointer for. A dpss 30mw blue is $1200 or more.
