I'm a physics undergrad currently working in an optics lab, and while I generally don't get to bring much of anything "home" (or even talk about what I do much) I've recently become more interested in lasers and purchased a couple. My brothers are both quite a bit older than I am and have relatively young kids - I thought it might be cool to bring some lasers of varying brightnesses and wavelengths to show them, but of course the first concern is safety, and this means making absolutely certain they understand before giving them something that has the potential to do any harm.

Most pointers you find on the market here in the USA seem to be IIIa, somewhere around 3mW, which is fine for most peoples' blink reflexes (and common sense), but if I'm going to hand something to a four-, five-, or six-year-old, I'd rather let them play with something that will not cause any damage even if they are careless, until I can determine that they understand what the safety issues are. But I digress.

I'm looking for a nice, safe, but still visible class II laser. Something they can see but won't actually hurt anyone if they're careless. The problem is... I cannot find this anywhere, for the life of me. Either the specs are not listed, or they're a class IIIa. It's like nothing else exists. Where might I find such a thing? They must exist because certain countries (like Australia) limit the classification of laser pointers to class II... Any insights, suggestions?

That's very nice, and I do love Laserglow, but I was hoping for an option that isn't almost $100 after shipping...

Yes you want an <1mW laser for children that age because you can't trust them to be responsible with it. I have a <1mW red laser I bought in a store. I would try searching on Amazon or eBay and elswhere, you should have no trouble finding something, the one I have runs on 3 LR41 button cells. It was a $50 laser discounted to I think $12.99 and then to $9 when I got the last one.
