After the small "accident":

http://laserpointerforums.com/f44/ouch-hurts-so-much-60087.html

happened a few days ago, went to a doctor for a vision checkup, that, thanks god and beside all stupid tricks i did with lasers past months, my vision is quite ok, the doctor tested my eyes with a bright intense machine than changed several wavelenght spectrum.

I told my doctor about my laser passion, and he, of course showed his disappoint...but, before i left the studio, he told me that occasionally, i can check the status of the retina with a couple of quick simple test... that of course can NEVER be reliable and accurate like a medical checkup, but IF one of this test shows a margin of doubt...then is time to run to a doctor:

-

1) LIGHT + FOCUS TEST

For this test you need a candle. Light the candle, CLOSE ALL THE DOORS, WINDOWS, so get a TOTAL DARK in your house, put the candle at approx distance of 10 meters (please see a conversion table for "feet") and, better if aligned on the height of your head/shoulders, . Put yourself BESIDE the candle (10 meters distance) on the left side, move the eyes laterally, till you see the candle light, it must be in good light intensity (al least CLEARLY VISIBILE) and in good FOCUS (your visual deficit, eyeglasses, contact lenses may influence this.. but it must be "decently" focused). IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO SEE THE LIGHT OF CANDLE OR YOU SEE IT REALLY POORLY, OR TOTALLY ONFOCUSED, OR IN A WEIRD SHAPE...GO TO A DOCTOR FOR A RETINA TEST. Repeat test, on the opposite side, watching the candle light putting yourself on the right side from the candle.

2) BLACK SPOTS TEST

Easy to do, open in full screen a white image in your monitor, came close the the image till the wait fully cover your vision, first cover one eye with the hand, then the other, just check BLACK SPOTS into the white area. If you see some visible BLACK FOG or BLACK PATTERN, after checking that your monitor is not faulty by a lcd leak luminosity on corners, RUN TO A DOCTOR. No visible black spots, then everything is allright.

-

3) MACULAR DEGENERATION TEST

5392186941_f32e1cdbde_d.jpg

Wearing your eyeglasses or contact lenses, test one eye per time, covering the other with the hand, came close the image till you can keep all the grid on focus, then focus on the black spot on the center, check if any of the lines of the square look heavy, blurred, distorted or missing, check if you can see all the corners of the square. If something is wrong, go to a doctor, if everything is in the right place. Then is all right.
Using a printed image instead of the monitor, would give more accurate results as long as, monitor hertz refresh and possible chromatic aberration, could give illusion on some distortion on lines, expecially on cheap lcd monitors and mostly on all crt.

Diet help: As known, the best food having chemicals for eyes health, with high concentration of carotenoid and flavonoids, are carrots, corn, huckleberry, spinach, kiwi fruit and egg yolks. But dont even barely think to replace a doctor visit with a carrot juice if something looks wrong with this tests.

Weirdly...energy drinks helps eye vision too, for the high concentration of taurine present into retina, but higher dose of caffeine are counter indicated for glaucoma bcause of increase of eye pressure, and xcess of eggs, increase cholesterol, so energy drinks and eggs are occasionally ok, all the other fruits, are recommended daily.

Fish: Great help for nerve conduction inside retina, good with high concentration of omega 3, like tuna and salmon.

Hope this helps.

No black spots. I have horrible vision though (-8.50 prescription) and I see a lot of floaters. I'm supposedly at some risk for retinal detachment...scary stuff.

The amsler grid is also a good way to check your eyes.

Awesome, plus rep for the easy retinal test, although as you said, not completely accurate but still usable.

+1 for the tests :thanks:
BTW, try being -14.75 sph, 3.75 cyl in one eye, -15.25 sph, 2.25 the other. The mental picture from one eye is so much "bigger" than the other, there is no way to see stereo no matter how hard the eye doctor tries.:cryyy:

Another interesting test is for field of vision, which can help detecting macular degeneration or retinal detachment to some degree:

Stand with your back against a flat wall, facing forward. Look to the left and then to the right. If everything is okay, you should be able to (just) see the wall behind you on both sides without rotating your head.

If you have a wall with a couple of picture frames or such on it, stand between them and see if their edges appear sharp and straight.

--> passing this test is by no means a guarantee that everything is alright, but if you fail, i'd suggest seeing a doctor.
