Yeah, we do have a lot people posting sob stories here in an attempt to get free lasers. However, the OP's story seems pretty credible, especially considering the bad press that lasers have been getting lately.

So you think it's ok to call me a liar because I don't believe everything that is posted?
Show me where I am a liar!
There have been so many BS stories here that some times you just call it as you see and I see you as an idiot!
All I asked for is where he was from and a little proof, and since he kept his location a secret at first it sounded a little fishy. There is nothing wrong with wanting to see a little evidence. But I guess that is beyond you to see that.

I you were ever here you would have seen that we have had new members fake that they had been hit in the eye with a 1w 445 and some other bull shit stories. I don't know why you are the one that is taking offense to me calling it like I see it since it was not directed at you.

I had to re-read his post after reading yours, and confirmed he didn't call you a liar; please check.

He implied that people who mistrust for little, or no reason are generally considered mistrustful.

Also, it's strange to see how you reacted to a mere suggestion of possibly being unreliable after you openly call another member a liar.

^^ I wasn't the only one to doubt the story at first, it just seemed a little fishy, I do believe him now. After some of the other fake stories that we have had I just called it like I saw it, I probably shouldn't have but I did and the alcohol didn't help me either.
As far as my reaction goes for the other I wasn't pissed, but the way I read it it sounded like I am being called a liar since I don't trust other people. I used to trust everybody and got screwed too many times. So I am not as trusting as I used to be and I don't see how that makes me a liar.

I absolutly agree !! We shold keep that up. I belive many of us forget, quite often are generations between us forum members. This can generate conflicts and is leading to misunderstandings.
For example. If a teenager is pissing on my leg for some reason it is cooking inside of me and i say to myself: Oh Boy you lucky one, i would :lasergun: you.
We have to consider that. A 17 Year old has other opinions then a 40 Year old.
Peace !

Just to make sure. I have nothing against teenagers, i`v been one too. I just made a example

Maybe some people here are unaware of the sad fact that Italy is still a VERY right wing
fascist state, even after all these years since WW2.
So the story doesn't surprise me at all, and I totally believe the OP.

Got the laser back this morning! - End of story -

First of all, i think my cousin, as told before.. just passed there in the station or at least made a phone call. He works for security, is not a policeman, ma works often with them as consultant for Inf.tech.

This morning early had one of the weirdest phone call ever. Get a phone call from municipal office of one of the towns close to seaside and a women just spent a few minutes on the phone with me.

In the beginning she had just an aggressive pitch of voice, just telling me some general stuff about laser safety, about eyes and that not very far from there was an airport, and if i knew all the stuff about safety and bla..bla..bla.. i think she expected something like a "quarrel" over the phone, but i was dismissive like a lamb, like i often generally am with people, except when is matter of serious stuff.

She asked if i had any report about laser abuse recently? (you ask this to ME? you do not have a database about?)..of course i said just "no", without arguing. i never had to do with justice, different than car tickets.

So she quit blaming, and with a much more friendly tone, told me to go the station as soon as possible with a self declararion with my personal data, the kind of professional use i intend doing with that laser, and technical specification of it.

...driving 1 hour...

I went there, she was alone into a huge office, took the paper (barely looked at it), let me sign a couple of papers, and gave the laser back into one sealed envelope.

Also, she let me pay there the ticket i received:

"There is a 150 ticket to pay, for using high powered device in public without proper authorization..if you want, you can pay it now.". I paid, got the receipt, and went out of there.

Opened the envelope, everything was fine, just the battery was removed from the held, and put inside anothe small transparent bag, inside the first bag.

Trying the device now at home, no scratches on it, it works just fine :)

Phew.

So you had to pay 150€ fine for it?

What a shame. And they think THEY know how it works and how dangerous it is.

But after all, they are doing their jobs, right?

Glad you got it back.. lesson learned then?

i dont think i will ever take outside, high powered lasers, but if i will do, i will take with me also some specification papers and a cheap one.. just in the case!
(but i keep thinking is not a great idea trying to fool them showing a cheap one after they seen a powerful one..)

My cousin told me on the phone, after i explained about the trick:

Sure, they will tell: "..oooh..nice this one...now, please show me the other." ;)

Of course, it depends on "who" you face and in which country. but i understood by this story,
that in certain area, they know quite much about lasers...basically, they know is better to take them away from people!

As i've said ..... get a "cheapo" one from DX or Priceangels or somewhere similar, that may push out 70/90mW, and pot-mot it for the maximum emission, so the beam is very visible (after all, you don't need to use it, til someone ask you to show it, so who care if is potmodded and short life ?) ..... ok. still a loss, but always better than the "real" one ;)

Also, try to mod it for make it look as the "real" one ..... as example, get one long almost the same and with the same color, and if the "real" one have a led on the side, place a led also on the "decoy" (if they see it in distance and notice that it have a light on the side, showing them another without a light is almost as to ask for troubles ..... after all, not all them are stupids ;)), and so on ..... you don't need to make them look exactly identical, only that they can be confused when someone see the "real" one in distance and they approach for ask you.

Also, you can also print a page with all the safety indications for correct use on it, and keep it with you, and if asked, show also that, with all the other papers, saying that it was with the laser, when you buyed it (always as example, art 4 of our ordnance say that the commercialization ban is not applied for pointers "commercialized for professional specific uses" and completed with all the informations for a correct usage ..... it's not a 100% safety, but is always one more nail for hang the hope ;))

About this, i can say you a thing ..... almost one year and half ago, a pair of "strange peoples" (going around always in couples with civil dresses and a hidden weapon, with a third one waiting in a car, asking specifically for buy illegal things ..... they lack only a flashing light on the hat and "police" tattooed fluorescent on the forehead, for be more recognizable, LOL) came in my shop and asked if they can buy one of the pointers i have for sale (no, i don't keep them hidden, and they are clearly stated as 60mW, and also is clearly stated that are sold only for professional uses to over-18 peoples) ..... i said, "sure, you only need to sign a paper (that i have prepared myself) in which you declare that you buy it for specific professional use, that you never give it to minors and that you take all the responsability for any damage or accident caused from not following all the safety measures clearly written in the included papers with the pointer".

They read all the paper, said me ok, paid, signed my copy and took away their pointer ..... and, til now, none come back for say me that i can't sell them and for confiscate the others, as instead they have done in a lot of other places, so i suppose my document was ok, after all .....

..

here in my country, the sale of laser pointer is totally banned after that incident in the football match, they told about it on news in tv.. you cant find anywhere nothing >1mw, and for things around 5mw you need to go to hardware store and buy a measuring level. but as you know, they have often a diffraction lens that flushes the beam in an angle from 0 to 90 degrees.

Anyway is possible to break them, and use the bare diode and it's driver for whatever you want, i did it for building some light sabers for photography.

Nice you got it back ! Were the Batteries still working?

Oh yes, that was an original Panasonic 18650, still pushing 4V at the tester vs. the 3.6V declared on specs!

Dont think they did turn on the laser at all, is just my impression.
