It looks like even Canadians are not safe importing lasers anymore.

I don't think ive seen anyone post something like this before, if it has been posted please do let me know.

About 8 months ago (Yeah, good job Health canada for taking 8 months to process my arctic and send me a seizure notice) I got an Arctic from wickedlasers. They sent the first one, which for some reason never got to me, so they sent another which I have now. Now I know why the first one never got here.

Health Canada will seize lasers.

They sent me a little packet of documents via express purolator courier (A private canadian postal courier), so after that 8 months they must had wanted me to get the documents fast :P

View the documents here

Why am I posting this?

I believe this is the first official laser seizure in Canada. I want people to know.

I attribute this mostly to the press wicked got.

What do you guys think? Would the queen really like my arctic? :P

A chainsaw is too much power needed to preform this task, here is a hatchet.

But on a realistic note, this may just be for Wicked Lasers, seeing as that's the center of attention as far as lasers go to the average person. Do they even try any of the "Flashlight LED $25" tricks that some companies has been known to do?

I think it would be really interesting to see their reaction to a reply in which you stated that the laser's purpose is to burn and melt plastic.

After all, look at the wording of the ACTUAL infraction:
"emits radiation that is not necessary in order for it to accomplish its stated purpose"

Well, if you state the purpose of your laser as being the melting of various plastics, then the radiation becomes necessary to the stated purpose. Even though that's an idiotic stated purpose, it's not an illegal stated purpose. I question whether they could confiscate the laser in that situation. I don't know though.

Canada
No regulations controlling the importation and sale of laser pointers have been established in Canada to date, except for the federal regulation that manufacturers comply with the Radiation Emitting Devices Act. As of November 2008 only two people have been charged under the federal Aeronautics Act, which carries a maximum penalty of $100,000 and five years in prison, for attempting to blind a pilot with a laser. Other charges that could be laid include mischief and assault.

You might be able to reply to them with an excuse to have it and get another laser on hand, although I don't know why you would want another arctic. ;)

The more the merrier.

The intended purpose is to burn and melt plastic to create engravings.

I'll be curious to know how they respond to this.

"impairment of health or death from radiation by reason of the fact that it emits radiation"

I hope they realise this is a laser, impairment yes but death is over the top after all this is not a James bond laser :D

It's interesting - they state that, for 7 of the 9 suggested uses, no more than 5mW is needed. However, I checked on WL's site, and there were no "9 suggested uses" or anything. Further, what if someone wanted to use this for the other two suggested uses? :P

This... Is terrible news. I wonder if they are just doing it for the arctic, since it has gained so much publicity.

Edit: Here is the link that was in the letter for anyone to lazy to type it in http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hl-vs/iyh-vsv/prod/laser-eng.php

Edit2: Shit, I hope this isn't what happened with my laser from O-Like. It's been 4 months since it got shipped, Suise sent me another one a week ago. The first one should have been here by now, even with the postal strike. So it's been lost in the mail or Canada confiscated it. :(

Hahah wow, thats pathetic. Your one unlucky guy =P . Atleast the + of wicked lasers is that they will send you another one. Thats to bad about Canada though. Hopefully its just that you were reaalllyy unlucky and that they normally don't care.

OT find it amusing that "assisted Human Reproduction" is a hotlink tab at the bottom right of the page.

Not sure what you mean, but I was referring more towards the "Assisted" part, unless one or the other person has a condition that prevents them from producing, I'd say just send them to a bar, let the alcohol "assist" them in their reproductive endeavors.

(spyrorocks) Too bad about your confiscated laser.

If it's any consolation, I buy from a Canadian Pharmacy; *technically* illegal because the drug (Nitrostat) is prescription-only here in the U.S., but OTC (over-the-counter) in Canada. There is always a chance (a small one) that U.S. customs will catch it, confiscate it, and send me a nasty letter.

If they ever do, I will send THEM a letter to the effect "Thank you for confiscating my nitroglycerin tablets. I am a disabled military retiree who VOLUNTEERED for 22 years of faithful service, and I DEPEND on that drug. Congratulations, I am in for a lot of painful, daily angina and if I have a heart attack, I will probably die. You do your country proud."

Speaking about custom offices, if you want to laugh ..... last week i received an email from PA saying me that they received back a pointer, that i had ordered more than 6 months ago and never received ..... and i still have received nothing from custom offices :p .

(and, incidentally, this is the 7th pointer that never arrive here, and the first one in absolute that they really have sent back to the seller :p)

Searching volunteers helpers for do a "touristic trip" to the custom offices place with a load of gasoline and matches (flamethrowers owners are welcome too) .....

Customs here in UAE think that lasers exist only in pen form, they even can't recognize these CNI cr2 hosts as lasers
