If you can use a straight edge then you could use a Laser level type
product instead... (the level is not required)
You are basically using the straight edge on the outer pulley
surface as a reference line...

BTW... I couldn't see a price for that "belt Hog" unit...
How much is it ??

$1695.00 for a Belt Hog and a straight edge doesn't always work since some pulley's have a thicker side, but it will get you close.

Yup, its still a pretty cool tool.
Ive just taken over a few accounts that have never been lined up, big 50 , 60 , 90 hp motors out drive to driven by 1/2 inch.
So many hacks in my field, these things where eating belts.
I have been trying to get them close but i still want them perfect. something like this would be a good second opinion at least for face to face measurments.

There is actually a method using dial indicators, but the math is long form, still necessary for setting the softfoot on motors etc, i just want this for fast checks, not the really intricate ones, those i sub out.

We had a lot that used couplers but we had pumps at 500 hp and at 3720 rpm, everything had to be perfect or else it would grenade.
For the big belt drives we used the long pieces of square stock that were machined the same taper as the belts. They worked really well, just not as good as the laser.

Yea there's no way I would pay $1,695 for that thing. I can definitely see why you would rather build one.

Exaclty, i think they are selling under the others reputation, some are def worth the extra, but not a magnet with a laser on it.
Im gonna start getting my supplies together.

You worked in a gold mine, cool
I used to own several old gold mines but only ever worked the placer claims.
I worked out of Winnemucca NV, at an open pit mine (Twin Creeks). The pit was 2.5 miles long, 1.25 miles wide and 1740 ft. deep and employed 1210 people until 2000 when they layed off 710 people due to gold prices. I left there in 2000 and moved to PDX since my gf is from Albany she wanted to be closer to her kids, and then I get transfered to Utah. I actually miss working there.

I know a lot of people here are complaining about patent rights etc but if you're just using it yourself I honestly see nothing wrong with that. Especially considering the fact that as you said it's a freaking laser with a magnet on it.

As long as you made so it looked different you would probably be fine, It's just when you copy it that you are going t have problems.

You are allowed by law to make a copy of any product
patented that is out there under the condition that you
only use it for yourself.
You can not legally sell it or profit from it without written
consent or a licence from the Patent holder.
