Can a >5mW laser be bought in the US?

Hey everyone! I just have always really wanted a laser that can light matches, pop balloons, and burn paper(preferably blue). However it seems lasers above 5mW of power are no longer allowed to be shipped in the US. So is there a way around this? Can I still get a >5mW laser in the US?

Any advice would help. Thanks!

Plenty of foreign companies will still ship >5mw lasers into the us. They just mark them as a flashlight or something to get through customs. You can find high powered lasers on ebay or buy them from sites such as laserbtb/sanwu/jetlasers/lazerer/O-like/Dragonlasers/skytech etc.

There are lots of ways to get lasers greater than 5mw of power into the US.
The easiest way for beginners is to buy a "5mw" laser on ebay, these lasers are more often than not way overspec. (This means they tend to have more than 5mw.)
There are other sites that ship to the US such as Lazerer, O-like, Dragonlasers, etc. More experienced members can surely provide a more extensive list.
The last way is from reputable sellers right here on LPF! :) There are tons of talented builders on here, just check the Buy/Sell/Trade board.

I actually wouldn't recommend Lazerer. There was a scandal with them about 1 year ago if I remember where orders(that were paid for) never got shipped out along with laser quality taking a dive.

Another option is to buy parts and assemble one yourself, there are no restrictions on the parts, also they are legal to own but there are some restrictions on how you can use them outside. Lab lasers (not battery powered) of any strength can still be imported.

I have brought two lasers from LAZERER recently without any problem. Quality is good and transaction is smooth. Some of my classmates also have good experience with them. Chance the "scandal" you mentioned is exceptional case and Max should sorted it out with the buyer already.

Well, seems like they've picked themselves up then. My apologies :yh:

That's why I said surely a more experienced member could give him a better list :)
