Can a 500mW Blue Laser cause cancer ?

Hi,

I would like to know if a 500mW laser can cause cancer. I'm about to buy one from Lazerer. Please let me know which cautions should I take to avoid accidents.

Anything can cause cancer these days... However many, many people on the forums have blue lasers of even higher power than that, none with cancer. It shouldn't be a concern.

People have speculating on a link between sleep loss and cancer. Because blue light is claimed to be sleep depriving, some associate blue light with cancer.

The only reason any of my lasers are sleep depriving is cause I can never just put them down and go to bed ;)

Lasers causing cancer? Try CURING cancer. Doctors have been experimenting with using lasers to cut out polyps (an early stage of a tumor). Would make no sense to cut it out with something that would cause the condition to come back...

Oh, and btw, those lasers are WAY more than 500mW. :)

I would think the primary concern would be the possible chemical changes that could result in cellular damage. Blue light has been shown to be possible to cause cell damage and there for it could, though the odds are unknown to me, cause cancer. There are more ways than ionizing radiation to get cancer. The odds should be kinda low though unless your burning tattoos off with a 445 :p I would not worry about it, high energy cosmic particles are slamming into you as we speak, we are already in the cancer lotto.

Look around you, gentlemen. There is blue light everywhere, all the time (blue is part of white, remember) so get used to it. The light from your little pointer accounts for approximately zero of your blue light dose of the day.

The risk of Photoretinitis increase with exposure to high-energy visible light (HEV light) 380-500nm over long term exposure. We are talking about damage to photoreceptors in the eye. To do DNA damage, you'd need a lot more energy than is possible in a laser diode. Typically the boundary between non-ionization and ionization starts at 4.9eV photon ~ 250nm with the X-ray boundary at or below 200nm or 6.2eV.
