Hey, I was searching for this, but could not find anything that would tell me.

I am planning of building homemade laser engraver, but I am not sure which laser to choose. 1W lasers are too expensive, so I was wondering that 300-500mW could be enough. But can I engrave white paper used in copier? Will 300 or 500mW be able to engrave to the paper?

Thank you

300-500mW 808nm you can not cut white paper!

you can choose 300-500mW 405nm is ok

Can you link me to something that will tell me what the difference between some wavelengths? Tyvm

So, found one 300mw, 3.8mm 405nm laser for 20usd, Will this work with white paper?
300mW Laserdiode 405nm Veilchenblau Laser Diode Modul Lasermodul | eBay

Or there is another one, 445nm 1W, 5.6mm for 18usd. type is NDB7412T
1W 1000mW Laser Diode Blue 445nm TO-18 5.6mm | eBay

Which is better for engraving to white paper? And is it even worth buying from ebay?Wont they be fake or weaker as listed?

Thanks

Unless you've got experience installing bare laser diodes and getting them working I'd suggest getting a complete module with driver, and a driver that has at least TTL modulation if not analogue. You can get a module with leads from DTR's Laser store and a driver from Opt Lasers.

Alternatively, you can try and find a half decent complete module on eBay.

300mW 405nm likely won't be enough, 1W 445nm should be fine if memory serves. I'd go for at least 0.5W 405nm.

That said, it's been a while since I've tried to burn paper with anything so I could be off...

Okay, I will probablly buy the 500mw 405nm full module with cooling. I guess 405nm is the best wavelenght for paper engraving. Thank you!

300mw of 405 should be fine if you have good optics. I've burned white stuff with a 50mw 405 with a lens that gives the beam a very short focus. even light matches.

405 is amazing at burning.

808 is worse than reds even since most organic things diffuse them or reflect alot or might even be transparent (coke is clear in IR)

Just like how your skin will absorb red to orange laser light but not green.
