The 3W, it is 6X more powerful, obviously it would burn better, by quite a lot.

right but with both focused to infinity then at what distance would the 405 still burn and the 445 peter out due to worse beam specs and being multi mode etc... like 10 ft? 15ft? this is the comparison im looking for cuz of course the 3w will smoke the 405 if i focus it.

I happen to have both a 3W 445nm, and a 500mW 405nm. I have not tested this. at a distance, I suspect using a 3 element lens would work better than a g2 lens, for the 445nm. though g2 lenses also give single modes more burning power without effecting the beam specs much, so maybe use a g2 for the 405nm, and a 3 element for the 445nm. let me do a little testing, I may post later

It seems the 405nm can burn slightly farther away, even with optimum lens. maybe, mt tests weren't too scientific

3W 445 will burn like a flame. 500mW 405 will cut like a knife. Hope that helps

That's a good analogy I'm about to get a 600mW violet and i have a few higher powered blues so you also answered my question i was thinking of asking but it was already put in this thread thanks + 1 if system allows

If you want to burn stuff .
Just get an IR laser if thats ALL you want.
Cos IR lasers comes a LOT cheaper , cooler due to higher efficiency and more stable than most lasers.

What kinda power could I go up to with an ir laser and what kind of burning distance can they do?

It depends .
You can have a labby IR 3.8W 808nm for just $375 USD from O-like.
If you want a 3Watter in the visible spectrum , you'll be looking at almost $50 -200 USD more.
And as for burning distance , it has a divergence of about <3.0mrad so I'll say anywhere within 10-15 m should be good as long as you have it nicely collimated.
Never tried it before tho.
Never have been a fan of labbies due to how well... non-portable they are
There is a problem tho , O-like is also known as No-like around here in LPF , so be wary of its quality
