You can get kits pretty cheap if you're that way inclined, but you might as well save yourself the trouble and buy a ready made laser. Quick and easy.

Hey PhDAvery,

Check out LaserGlow, and DHGate. Those guys have some affordable, quality gear. :)

Building high power laser without prior experience with high power lasers can be dangerous. You better learn how to handle one already complete and working. It's also better to use some 'lower' power laser first. Like 200mW red, they can be got for $20 IIRC. For high beam visibility you will want green, which are usually not built, but bought. For burning you will want 405nm or 445nm, and it's better to build those.

For that budget you can buy a very powerful quality laser at 1W - Jetlasers.org, Official Sale site for Jetlasers laser products.

or

laserbtb.com

And many other sites but i have been told these are very good in price/quality
Why waste money building a laser when you have no experience building lasers? it can turn out to be dissaster and you will have lost alot of money...
IMO it is best to buy your first powerful laser and start your first built cheap and low powered.

First laser buy one, end of story just my two cents if it works and you get more interested well think about getting a host and driver board, diode etc and making one tons of info on the forum ...also in that budget you have allowed for a set of googles which are essential and the right ones for the colour of laser you want
