Brokerage Fees (Lazerer, O-like)

Hello,

I have been reading about the nightmare people have been having regarding paying $50 + brokerage fees on items as cheap as $12 when receiving items shipped by UPS and others into Canada. I assume this happens in this U.S. too when receiving international shipments?

Is there an ideal shipper to request when ordering from Chinese sellers such as Lazerer or O-like? I see Lazerer has a UPS logo on their page... I would like to avoid this like the plague:tsk:

Is EMS better? Or Hong Kong post? Do they actually ship to the U.S. and Canada? Any Canadians and Americans who have any insight into the best shipper or experiences with this would be greatly appreciated... :thanks:

P.S. My apologies if this was posted in the wrong section, not sure the best location.

If its marked low you SHOULD be okay. Like you mentioned, avoid UPS whenever you can while importing to Canada as they tend to stick it to you with brokerage fees. Avoid DHL also if you can. If you ever have the option, use USPS ground as there is only a $5 fee plus taxes.

When I got my lasers from China (Wicked Laser) I believe there was no fee, as far as I can remember. You should be ok, just ask them to mark it as a gift when they ship it.

Thanks Tech Junkie and Pilgor.

I hope if enough people boycott UPS they will stop this practice. I was reading on another forum about how UPS was wrongly telling Canadians that they could not "clear" (can't remember the right terminology)their own packages through customs and HAD to pay the $50 fee.

Apparently the Canadian Border services agency responded back to a question about this saying that UPS was breaking the law by stating it was not possible for a person to do this without the fee, and that it was a right for an individual to do this themselves under the law by going and doing the paperwork. Apparently though UPS gives out this false information on a regular basis. This is according to another forum discussing shipping items from the U.S. to Canada from Ebay etc. I think it was on a post a year or two old, so not sure what the latest news on this is...
