I just got around to getting my first laser. I bought a cheap eBay one because I don't want to go all out with my first laser. I also want to lean how to safely handle one so I don't go and burn my eyes out. I bought this laser right here,
Military High Power Adjustable Focus Green Laser Pointer Pen 5mW Safety Key | eBay

It is advertised as being 5mw. I don't really believe that since they say it can burn stuff. I have been reading that green ebay lasers like this one are often overspec and can reach over 50mw. Does anyone have any experience with this laser? What about safety glasses? Will I need any for safe operation of this laser?

Thanks! :)

Safety glasses are a MUST for eBay lasers.

Just act responsibly, cautiously(which im sure you will), and you shouldn't have a problem. Have fun with your first greenie :)

Learning safety first is a good idea!! That is something hardly anyone does. Most people come here saying "Bluuuhhh, I want a burning laser for 15$ and it has to run on 2xAAA batteries", with no regard to safety. You are correct in assuming that laser will NOT be 5mW, somewhere in the neighborhood of 50-80mW is more likely (side note, you could have gotten that same laser for half that price. There are many of them on eBay). As far as glasses go, I know Eagle Pair makes good safety goggles, but even like the Ubex orange goggles will work. However, these will not block out IR- the laser you bought, like all other cheap chinese lasers, is not IR filtered. How much it produces depends, it could be 5mW, or it could be 50mW. IR is invisible to us humans, but still equally as dangerous as visible light--however, 5mW of IR is not dangerous, just as 5mW of visible light is not dangerous. Basically, get safety glasses for the visible part, don't point it right in your eyes, and you will be fine :p People on here like to freak out over IR, it really isn't that big of a deal, as long as you don't stare into the beam.

Cheers

I actually just bought some of the Ubex ones before I saw your post. I just won't point it into my eyes and I should be ok. :)

Look at my sig. Those eagle pairs will cover any violet, blue or green handheld laser, AND IR emissions from leaky or un filtered DPSS lasers. They won't cover yellow and red, but they're a great investment for the other colours. I got them from the survival laser website.

Nice. Thank you for the link. At only around $30 I might buy those.
