Hi Guys,

I have a majot problem - got a whole flock of Commarants and Seagulls perched on my boat, making a mess everywhere!

My friend suggested I use a green laser to chase the birds away. Is there any products on the market that I can mount on my boat to automatically chase the birds away. Something that shines in an omnidirectional or movable pattern.

If not, I'd like to make my own device. Any help would be appreciated. It needs to shine atleast 15m far, be powered by 12V DC and can handle salty ocean conditions.

Please don't post the exact same thread 3 times (twice even in the same subforum). This will be viewed as spam and you won't be as likely to get a helpful answer.

Now, I had this long post typed out but because a mod removed your other topic this reply is now gone, so in a nutshell:
I don't think it's a good idea as you have to leave the laser unattended and it could possibly hit people on boats further away or planes in the sky, which is pretty illegal.

It will work to scare them off as I've done it myself, just make sure to never actually aim at a bird and just shine in their general direction. High power laser should not be pointed at any living animal/person.

Hi Coby, the internet connection is bad this side, unsure why the posts went to the other subforums.

I do not want to make use of low power lasers, in the range of <5MW. I'm looking for a machine in the line of TOM500 that they use at airports, except a cheaper and smaller version.

The connection at this site is fine.

I'd try a plastic owl first.

Fireworks are more fun :eg:

Get those little dynamite stick style firecrackers with the green, thick fuses. Those you can throw in the water :) Cheap bottle rockets work in the water sometimes too.

Stick a roasted chicken on the mast as an example of what happens to birds on THIS boat!

Try ordinary flashlight if it doesn't work :)

For some reason the forum decided to hiccup... so re-posting grammatically corrected reply.

What kind of boat are we talking about?

There are a few articles online about laser systems being developed to kill off mosquitoes you may find of interest, where a laser targets the mosquitoes in flight.

Building a system that actually tracks birds would very difficult.

Building one that simply repeats a pattern, randomly around your boat, would be possible, but having a powerful laser aimed randomly around, you run the risk of lasing something other than birds...

You can contact these guys: Sonetronics Design and Manufacture of Premium Military Equipment they recently developed some equipment specifically do deal with birds at airports, warehouses, etc, ask about their bird hazers. Although be forewarned their systems are meant for government/military/industrial use, so they aren't cheap.

I know for a fact this trick works on buzzards or vultures as there called here, it's sooo simple. Take a plastic seagal or try that owl and hang it upside down. I learned this trick through a buddy whose in charge of parks and recs in my area (well at least for pest)in my area and after many calls and hours of research this method works hands down.

The birds think that the upside down bird is sick and stay away.

This does work, at least on swallows.
I hung a plastic owl on the peak of our church, to see if it would keep the swallows away. Those little buggers were craping On everything!
We had some heavy winds, and the tie on the top of the owl came undone, it was upside down. And the birds all were gone. They went to the fire department next door. Lol
I told the chief what kept hem away from the church, and he hung one upside down on the fire house.

Now the birds live across the street at the general store!

I am pleased to hearing that such animal friendly alternatives exist :) I'm not for pointing high power laser at animals.

the more expensive owls do work better(the head or wings move)- I see them(all types) on a lot of boat slips and boats- also on beach houses- they do work-- forget the laser idea-waste of time-

lol- these are sea birds not crows--ha ha

maybe a manican would work-
I have seen aluminum pie plates on strings moved by the wind work a little.
Hire a 12 yr old with a slingshot- search 'bird deterrants airports'

gulls can be more like flying rats and when they perch over cars in the trees they are a real PITA- people feeding them only makes it much worse. its illegal in some cities to feed them.
let us know if you find a good way- this topic has come up before- IIRC lasers were never the answer--
