Attempt at making 589nm

Hey guys,

Just tonight I decided to try and see if I could create a "poor man's yellow" with my Libra and Anser. I can say so far it seems to have worked well for me but you experts can be the judges :wave:

I used as previously said my 4mW Libra(635nm) and 3mW Anser(532nm). As you can see the Anser is also slightly longer then the Libra by only a few inches.

Looks like a true 589nm right? :crackup:
To me this looks pretty good considering I have never seen a yellow in real life. BEST OF ALL it only cost me $60

If anything, that's probably a closer mix to 565/570nm :p

I was thinking that too when I saw it as Lime Green. I just wasn't sure since I though 635+532=589 :wave:

Edit: Seems I may have created a new wavelength then ;)

Are you sure about that!? My calculator reads "635+532=1167"

No, they give you something between red and green depending on the proportions used. The light is still 635 and 532, there is NO yellow present and your title is misleading. Here is a video that explains some of it:


If you were to actually combine a 635nm photon with a 532nm photon, you would get a 289nm photon since energies add, not wavelengths.

650nm and 532nm should be mixed with a 5:1 ratio.

It's actually closer to 4:1 for for 660/532, so it would be even less for 650, and less still for 635.

I've seen that video before. It's Vsauce. And im sorry if it's misleading but "styropyro" combined both green/red lasers and made yellow so I thought I could try it :beer:

So you've seen it twice now and you're still missing the point. "Yellow" and "589nm" are not the same thing. You have not made 589nm light at all, and neither did styropyrofoam.

I know I haven't. I've just combined two wavelength's to show a new "color".

Don't worry Cyparagon, I know it isn't 589nm.

But you did say that in the thread title, so it's pretty misleading. And you still called it 589nm, even though you said you know it's not?

This thread is being taken way out of context.

This was just a simple, fun thread where I combined both my Libra and Anser's dot's to see what would result from it. :undecided:

To me it looked like 589nm so I called it that.

Yes this is WAY closer to 532nm than it it is to 635nm. Green is, mw to mw, about 5 times brighter than red to the human eye, so to get a mix that is exactly in between 532 and 635 (589) you need (as DJNY said) a 5:1 combo. A very doable mix is 200mw red and 40mw green. (that will not be an easy mix if you keep shopping at laserglow :D )

Equal brightness is NOT the same as a good color balance. This is speculation on your part, and it is wrong.
