Airport Security and laser pointers & Miami

So, i'm still new to LPF and needed to find out some info about traveling with laser pointers. As well, i need to find out what the rules and laws are for laser pointers in Miami.

I'm flying from Reno to Miami to work at Ultra Music Festival at the end of March. I wanted to take some of my pointers with me to play with while out there. Im hoping to take both of my 445nm Yobs along with two 100mw 532nm. Anybody have any issues while going through airports with your lasers ?? Any suggestions to avoid any problems while traveling with them ?? Maybe separate the host from the batteries or something ?? Maybe dont need to do anything ??

Finally, anyone from MIAMI on here that knows the local & state laws about shooting these on the beach in Miami ?? I don't want to get these taken by local cops.

I work for TSA, and I can tell you laser pointers are not prohibited as carry on items. With that being said, a supervisor can deem an item not fit for carry and and make you check it in if you wish to take it with you to your destination. In other words, if for some reason they inspect your bag and come across your laser and they ask you what it is, tell the officer it's a laser pointer, not a burning laser

I've traveled with high powered lasers before without incident, more than 3 times recently and one of them internationally.

I did, however take apart my lasers, remove the batteries & stored them in separate bags. I figured in any worse case scenario, under scrutiny or suspicion - it wouldn't appear I was trying to kill people with laserbeams

I've never had any problems, any questions or concerns

I'm from Miami, and I use my lasers down here alot. Its fine to use lasers as long as you do not point them at people, animals or vehicles. However, if it comes to light, any non-FDA compliant lasers are also not "officially" allowed to be operated, but few people know this, let alone what the FDA regulations actually are, (aka key switch, warning label, 3 sec power on timer, armed LED..etc..)

I travel a lot, and I always have some lasers with me. I have a couple low power IQS ones, a green and purple, and a red that are always in my laptop bag. I have never even considered taking the batteries out. I never check a bag, and I have never had any issue with anyone even looking twice at these.

However, when I have taken my Arctic or O-Like 400mw 532, I have taken a few more steps. With the Arctic, I basically disassemble it. Since it is hefty, and would probably make a strange image on the bag xray, I don't want to give them any reason to stop and open my bag. There's rules on clubs, and a 6-10 inch metal object can make them curious. So I take off the crown, pull off the end cap, take out the battery. I put the battery in my larger carryon and keep the pieces separate in my laptop bag. I take the battery out of the O-like and take the tailcap off as well. I have not had any issues on the east coast, though I haven't traveled out west with them.

I don't think it'll be a great deal. but be careful there a few policemen that want to keep your thing just because. Then they take them for their own use

If you put it in your carry on without batteries in them it would probably be illegal for them to tell you that you cannot take them with you. Carry on is another issue, they can probably tell you what you can and cannot take based on their ego er "experience".
Just overlook the unconstitutionality of it all and you will be fine

I personally will not be flying for awhile lol.

i've never tried to carry on, i always check in....with my firearms. my rifles have a laser sight and this is one of them. batteries are in my carry on, never together with the laser and the "flashlights" i take with me.

Are you sure about this, I have read numerous times that home built lasers not for sale do not have to comply with the FDA regulation, though this has never been on the FDA site so I could be wrong.

Where did you get this from?

I just got back from a cruise and took two >5mW green pointers with me. One in checked luggage (100mW) and one in my carry on (50mW). We travelled via American Airlines from St. Louis, MO to Miami, FL. The batteries were removed from both pointers. At no time was I ever questioned about them. Lasing from the aft deck drew the attention of a crew member, but nothing was said or done. On the way back, both were placed in separate checked bags minus batteries. Again, no problems.
