i dont think you could measure the power of that, it melt the meter before it would have time to measure it ;D

hehehe, You might be right!!
I'm sure its calculatable for the reference purpose. I'm really curious what wavelength beam it is!
I bet in can stay ON for at least few seconds at the time!

If it's based on the 747 version of the airborne laser the wavelength is 1315nm. If it uses the same pump chambers then it will be on the order of 175,000 W

I read somewhere that the lab version for testing could run for an Amazing 70 Seconds and this thing can Vaporize your home form over 20km away! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Check out the pics at this link, if I can post a link? I added spaces in the first part, just remove after pasting.

It is supposed to be a Megawatt class laser... I can't even comprehend what kind of damage that thing will do... if a 100W CO2 laser can cut through steel... 1,000,000W? You would think a couple kWs would be enough...

Can cut through steel ten thousand times as fast. I think speed is the problem here, as your piece of steel won't move. But a rocket flying towards you is friggin' fast, shaky, and maybe covered with a highly reflective material. So you might want to deliver those "so-and-so-may" Joules of thermal energy as fast as possible so that it won't be able to evade the beam.


Oh, and maybe then Hollywood and associates will finally learn that lasers do not make sound (at least not some "lasery" sound while in the air), lasers do not create an explosion by themselves (only if explosives are "on board") and "laser bolts" do not have a visible motion!!! It's the speed of light, for *random*s ,sake!

that's always bugged me about holywood. But hell, they gotta make the "effect" Just like explosions in space. Unless there's a ton of O2 it just can't sustain burning.

The ATL is not a megawatt laser. The megawatt laser is the system mounted on the 747 platform. This airborne laser system uses multiple pump chambers to get to those power levels. A C-130 simply does not have room on board for multiple pump chambers. I believe it has one pump chamber generating 175,000 watts. Here is a quote from globalsecurity.org:

"...but they all rely on the same basic laser capability to generate 100 to 300 kW of optical power and deliver it precisely to a small, pre-defined spot."
