I'm just got my 445nm 2w LD, with het sink and everything.
My LIon batteries havent come yet.
I'm using the mohgasm linear driver (1.8a) to power it.
the driver can have 6-9v input.
is it ok to just test my setup with a basic 9v disposable battery?

Yeh but don't expect them to last long.

To determine the battery life, divide the capacity by the actual load current to get the hours of life.

yep, i know. just wanna test to see if my setup works so i can install it into my host tonight instead of waiting for the batteries. thanks :)

2W diode? You've hit onto something contraversial there - 2W rarely gives the diode a long lifetime. How hard are you planning to drive it?

Not if he is using a G1 or G2 lens.

Good luck with your sell, dont forget pics !

Glad it worked.

I was considering buying some battery cases with different voltages for bench testing, you've convinced me its a good idea.

Hey JaiNobeZ. What kind of lifetime would you expect from a 2W 445 on short <30 sec duty cycles? I'm curious as I have one in the pipeline.

Not a simple question to answer - and I'm not the ideal guy to ask, to be honest. It depends partly on the heatsink, partly on the diode's efficiency (which varies quite a bit with the 445nm diodes), and partly on the driver. And even then it's hard to say. Some people on the forum will argue that duty cycles and a big, well-cut heatsink will compensate for driving the diode hard, others argue otherwise. Not really my area of expertise. But read around.

Not all 445 diodes are created equally. The vast majority will only do 1.8W or so running at 1.8A even with a good lens. Only a select few are efficient enough to top 2W, and these are generally cherry picked out by people who harvest the diodes and are sold at a premium.
